The Nevers takes us back in time to Victorian London, namely August 3rd, 1896. After an apparent eclipse occurs, a large number of people made up of mostly young women are blessed with incredible gifts. Labelled the touched, these people are stigmatised in society and have been rejected by their family. Sent to a girls house for the gifted known as St. Romaulda's Orphanage, I think early on most people will be drawing several X-men and Umbrella Academy comparisons.

Now amongst these people are Amalia True and Penance Adair. Both have their own superpowers with the latter being an incredible inventor that's able to make ingenious creations because of her ability to see energy.

This means that the house has technology far advanced beyond the rest of society and if they wish to wheel out any incredible steampunk inventions, the show will be able to do it without any questions asked. In the episode, we see a perfume bottle that's very much used as a flashbang, a tape measure that can be used as handcuffs and an umbrella with a taser in it. These are of course similar to the touched as they look like regular people on the surface but they all have a hidden side to them.

The pair set out to help a girl named Myrtle who has apparently been possessed by a demon and we watch as they travel through our capital.

Now we also learn that True is able to see small flashes of the future but for the moment she can't control when this happens.

The pair do their professor X and try to discover what's up with Myrtle which is when we discover that she is speaking several different languages all at once. Her parents believed that she was speaking in tongues which is where the demon possession came from.

Now things are made worse when a group of monster try and abduct Myrtle. Though the women manage to escape back to the house with the help of a motorised Car within the carriage, it's clear that they haven't ran into people like this before.

You should continue with the breakdown for this series. As you stated - many good people have worked on this series and they shouldn't be penalized for JW's demise.

One thing to note: Mary’s power seemed to be that her voice only affected the touched. That’s why it only affected Maladie, True, Penance, and a handful of audience members. They want to get Mary back at the end not just to save her but also because they know they can find and help more of the touched with Mary’s singing, like Cerebro from X-men.

I really liked this so far. I hope people give it a chance.

I think Augustus' ability is being able to feel an animal's emotion - or maybe even speak with them.

I thought it was very interesting that Penance was the only one able to see Mary's song flowing into people and that she was also the only one who could see the "snowflakes" falling as the ship flew over. This is because they were forms of energy, and her turn is the ability to see energy.

Something I noticed upon rewatching the first episode was that the spaceship seemed to amplify what everyone already did.
Mary was auditioning to be a singer. That's her power.
Penance was shown to be inventive and resourceful when she fixed her water pump. Now she's a steampunk inventor.
Horatio is a doctor. Now he can heal by touch.
And so on.

Note that the newsie said "worse than the ripper" regarding Maladie in the early scene, so both characters are in this universe.

Yes keep doing the break down of the show. I know everything has to be canceled these days, but I enjoyed the first episode. Hopefully it keeps going.

I would really appreciate if you keep this goin! I really liked this show and think it has a lot of potential. Also your breakdowns I feel like hell create a fandom. Thank you for the hard work!

Maladie can’t be a gender swap of the ripper because in their universe, Jack the Ripper exists.

I actually read the ending as Massen’s daughter actually died and transfered to True which explains her “not my face” line and how she knew Massen was a soldier

Nick Frost's character did not deny giving those other guys information. He literally refused to answer on whether or not he did. He said that was his business.

BTW, Maladie is not a gender swap of Jack the Killer, the boys who's selling the newspaper is actualy yelling that Maladie has now more kills than the Ripper.

The intro of Primrose was good, they definitely played with angles and perspectives when she was sitting in the corner to seem normal sized. There were other items there, but I first thought they were just toys.

Irish actress Ann Skelly, 24, told Entertainment Weekly she “loved working with Joss”.

“I found him to be a lovely boss and director. He was very open, ” Skelly said. “I felt he cared a lot for the actors and the crew.

“It was definitely one of my favourite on-set experiences for sure.”

Her co-star, fellow Irish actress Laura Donnelly, 38, also had nothing but kind words for Whedon.

“It was the best screen, film or TV experience that I’ve had on any set. From my point of view, he [Whedon] always felt very supportive and protective of the artistic integrity and what we as actors needed in order to be able to do our job.”
