In America they have to reimburse us too…unfortunately the loop hole is you have to know about the law and “remind” staff about it

They are required to reimburse you but they absolutely will not tell you that and they will absolutely fight you every step of the way

American airline companies are required to give you all the same refunds but noone knows those policies

Happened to my family once, the airline (European) ended up putting like 4 or 5 families in a 5 stars hotel because it was the only thing available... Must have been expensive 😅

In europe we were boarding and they had overbooked the flight. A airline rep was walking around offering business class tickets on the next flight and 500 euros cash

Actually, according to EU261, the compensation (250, 400 or, in some cases 600 euros) depends on the reason of cancellation- it has to be the airline's fault to be able to get it.

This is so true! I missed a flight bc they overbooked and British airways put me on another flight a few hours later, let me hang out in their lounge, flew me first class on the rebooked flight and gave me 200euros cash for the inconvenience.

I remember about 20 ago getting a British Airways flight from Beijing to London that was delayed a couple of hours leaving Beijing. It meant I was going to miss the last train home to Wales. When I landed in Heathrow, the lady at the BA desk organised a room at the Radisson (I think) for free for me, voucher for an evening meal, voucher for breakfast and they paid for the first train in the morning. I was massively impressed.

They are required to give you a hotel room if they do that.

If you fly on a European airline, you are also coved by these laws, even on flights departing from North America. If you book an American airline, when departing from Europe you are covered by these laws too!🎉

One time we were flying from Miami back to Europe and our flight got cancelled and the next one out was in like a week because the other ones were fully booked. But we managed to negotiate and they flew us to NYC where we were placed in a hotel (paid for by the airline) for 3 days before flying out through JFK. The airline gave us food tickets for the whole three days and also paid for taxis to and from the airports. It was stressful because we had to argue a lot but in the end we were pretty pleased with the service.

With singapore airways, my brother was stuck in Japan for only 14 hours, but they gave him an upgrade to first class, allowed him access to the premium lounge, and gave him 800 AUD cash.

I remember the first time I traveled abroad alone, on the way back my first flight was delayed and I missed my second flight, I was young and had no idea what to do, I’d run from the first plane in the hopes of getting the second so was knackered had no more money and thought I’d be stuck there, the French lady at Paris airport saw I was freaking out and got me on the next flight that left in 3 hours, gave me a gift card to get some lunch and checked in with me an hour before the flight to make sure I knew where to go as it was in a different terminal. She was so lovely

Yes Delta the worst; they didn’t give any compensation I submitted the claims and emailed them they don’t care. They knew they wouldn’t be able to take off and issue no notices and simply left us stranded in island where at night nobody would be able to accommodate us and we were still stuck for extra 24 hrs

It depends on why the flight was cancelled (at least this was true in 2009!). I had a flight from LAX to SFO cancelled due to a mechanical failure in the plane and the airline put us up in a hotel. They told us that if it had been cancelled due to poor weather or something out of their control, then we wouldn’t have got the hotel!

I missed my flight in Europe, they gave me next flight in the morning, they also booked a hotel for overnight stay for free and on top of that I got about €500.

Other people may disagree but Europe is the best place to live for quality of life and protection of one’s basic rights.

If I ruled a country, they'd definitely always have a spare plane with full crew waiting on the airport just in case another plane fails. They'd either do that or meet the consequences - obligatory upgrade to the highest class + for every hour of waiting, a non-expiring voucher for an unlimited length highest class flight. Of course they'd have to pay for your overnight stay and other stuff too. So if they cancel your flight to the neighboring country and you have to wait 12 hours for the next one, well, that means 6 free trips whereever you want (6 because going there and going back).

Hmm... This isn't inaccurate I guess, except for the French customer service agent. They would never volunteer this info, and won't make it easy for you AT ALL. 😂

Once we were delayed so much in France with Air Canada that they also gave us free Disney Paris tickets on top of everything else, I still remember that and it was great
