More precisely from South America, the Incas studied the Potato, we have the places where they planted it and used different climatic levels to test it, in Peru there is a variety of a few thousand types of Potatoes coming from ancestral tradition. Being genius or "civilized" does not mean reading or writing or developing weapons for gaining power, but asking what our legacy to humanity will be. The Incas had their goal in nature, and how to respect and develop it. Europe was more about reading, philosophizing and developing war to gain power as the main objective. Then the criterion was different, but an agricultural genius with current creation (potatoes) has nothing to envy of Leonardo with paintings and designs not implemented for war.
