Make an air pump quieter - How to do it!

In this video I show you how to make an air pump quieter. please note that polyfil is fire retardant and will not catch fire unless exposed to a direct flame, air pumps generate heat normally and the polyfil will also get warm but will not catch fire because of the nature of 100% polyester batting, 100% polyester products are flame retardant by nature because they will not burn unless they are in direct contact with a direct flame, this being said modify your air pumps at your own risk.

I had to put on subtitles because my air pump is so loud!

Tried this with an old whisper 10-30 that was loud enough to be heard from the room next door. I was slightly more conservative that the author and avoided packing around the metal bar next to the electrical coil, as I noticed it was already pretty warm to the touch when I opened it up prior to the poly fill treatment.

The noise difference was incredible. Can only hear it at all when standing right in front of the tank and it's only a very soft hum. It is not noticeably warmer either (it is about as warm as the skin on my forehead). I have been running it for about three days now with no issues. I will probably open it up in a week or so to look for any signs of damage but don't really anticipate there will be any.

Thanks, Trafish!

The empty space is for heat distribution. This will make it run warmer (and quieter) but it will cut the life of your pump in half from prematurely wearing parts due to heat exposure

Worked great, I put a little less polyester than in the video and it reduced the noise by a huge margin. Also all the negative comments are just big air pump industry trying to downplay this guys great solution. They want your money to buy expensive quiet pumps when you can reduce the sound of cheap ones on your own.

Thanks for the tip. Will this cause the pump to overheat. Or would it make the pump a fire hazard?

My hi-blow pump has some sort of sound/vibration wrap inside of it. I think you should use a rock-wool box of insulation to have the pump in instead b/c it's sold as fire resistant.

Hi sorry to be a pain, but I'm just worried because I don't want to do this and it sets a light LOL, mine is in my living room and it's loud, is it safe? Thanks

I bought one of these. It’s connected to a wheel ornament. It makes the wheel spin super fast tho. Is there a way to manipulate the air pressure going into the tank?

Need update please…
Has any of the air pumps become a fire hazard ?

Your first sound level test was with the screws undone. The top and bottom of the air pump was loose. So you would expect the air pump to make more noise.
