Abstract Algebra 27: The size of the symmetric group S_n is n!
Abstract: We explain why there are n! possible different permutations from a set {1,2,3,...,n} to itself. In other words, we explain why there are n! elements in the symmetric group S_n. As our main example, we show that there are 3! = 3*2*1 = 6 permutations in the symmetric group S_3.
