I have to disagree with one statement. To me the Catechism is the Driver's manual of Catholic teaching and practice. Just as most Motor Vehicle Departments give a brief and distilled guide to all the Driving and traffic laws that one needs to know to pass the DMV test, the Catechism is a book that briefly covers basic information we as Catholics need to know. It is highly referenced with footnotes that point to where in the Bible or Church Councils and other references to find more information. But I think the key is that it is or should be a starting point in learning the Faith, it should inspire us to read the Scriptures, and other resources, either written for layfolk or with proper introduction there is nothing wrong with Layfolk from reading the Summa of St. Thomas, or the documents promulgated by Councils or Popes, or reputable Catholic Theologians. It's also good to read other Catholic Catechisms. While I've read very deep and scholarly theology texts both in the Seminary and in the 35+ years as a priest, I still go back every year or two and re-read the old Baltimore Catechism, and the Penny Catechism from the UK. They present in a very simple way the truths that great theologians present, and it helps to ground me so that when I am speaking with children or someone who is new to the Faith, I can discuss it with them at the level they are at, without obscuring the faith by using a vocabulary that they may not understand,
Pray for me a sinner. That I may see each person I encounter with Christ's eyes, as a sole loved by God and worth redemption.

Thank you for the explanation. I am going to start reading this so that I can really learn the Catholic Faith. I also plan on reading this with the Catholic Bible. It helped explain alot for me to get started.

Cradle Catholic here. Grew up not knowing this catechism document existed. It's like the user's manual of the Catholic Church along with the Bible. Would have been very useful knowing this information early in life. I think majority of Catholics today have not even read the Catechism and the Bible.

Then I just recently bought the amazing Ascension Catechism with the white vinyl cover which is color coded & comes with an instruction pamphlet guide. It’s a beautiful catechism.
