The conflict in Manipur, contrary to the narrative that it began with a High Court judgment, has much deeper roots tied to illegal immigration from Myanmar. A large number of Kuki migrants from Myanmar have been settling in Manipur for years, and reports suggest that over 980 illegal villages were established within a short time span, with the figure likely being much higher after more thorough investigations. These immigrants not only defied the state government’s orders to settle in designated and documented camps, but also encroached upon protected forest areas, violating environmental laws and contributing to widespread deforestation.

The Kuki settlers’ refusal to comply with government orders triggered tension, as their illegal occupation of land in protected zones threatened the fragile ecosystem. When the government initiated steps to identify these illegal settlers and reclaim the forested areas, the Kuki community responded with agitation, ultimately escalating into violent conflict. This defiance, paired with their insistence on claiming rights to land that is not theirs, has contributed significantly to the unrest.

Moreover, this wave of immigration has created demographic imbalances in Manipur, with reports indicating that the Kuki population in the state now includes a large number of non-citizens. The illegal settlements have been linked to other issues, such as the cultivation of poppy fields, which are part of a larger drug trafficking network tied to the Golden Triangle. This has not only caused severe environmental damage but also brought international criminal activity into the region.

The conflict is thus not simply about ethnic or political differences, but about the flagrant violation of law and order, the degradation of protected areas, and the refusal of illegal immigrants to follow the rules set by the state. The state's efforts to restore legal order and environmental balance have been met with resistance from the Kuki settlers, who have chosen violence over negotiation, pushing the region into a state of conflict.

This situation requires urgent action to restore the rule of law, reclaim illegally occupied land, and address the demographic and environmental challenges posed by unchecked immigration from Myanmar

I m from Manipur but sir with respect, if u want and understand the real reason for the conflict please do podcast with other unbiased officers . 3rd may 2023 incident was a pre planned well coordinated within Kukis if u analyse the incident happen that days. Kukis planting poppy, making money and financing the weapons under the pretext of SOO agreements. Indegenous meitei people being targeted and killed by Kukis from myanmar. Save Manipur, save India. We want NRC, deport all illegal immigrants, full border fencing, stop free movement. We don’t want Assam rifles, we want Indian army, bsf in Manipur.

On 03-May-2024, Manipur Police, Commandos & army can reach Churachandpur within 40 min. DGP was a Kuki & he didn't to act timely. He knew everything about intelligence reports & the event was pre-planned. Commandos from Bishnupur & Imphal could have done a nice job to bring law & order under control. Pliz deploy 10 battalions of CRPF/BSF/ITBP in Tengnoupal, Pherzawl & Churachandpur to thwart illegal immigration from Burma. Peace will return to Manipur.
