NTSB released the final report for a Cirrus SR-22 GTS G3 (N183V) on October 24, 2020. The plane was approaching the destination airport of Atoka in Tishomingo, Oklahoma when the pilot had erratic high oil temperature readings. Ultimately the CAPS parachute was deployed.

Equivalent to jumping from a speeding car because the Check Engine light came on.

Accidents are always a chain of events any one of which could stop the accident but when all the holes in the swiss cheese line up you're going to have a bad day. Just after maintenance always feels a bit more risky. Glad they made it.

Let's see if I understand this and can put it in once sentence. While on short final at low altitude the pilot cut the mixture and shut-off the engine causing him to not be able to reach the runway. Yes, I know he had an indication but he still had a running engine and he was at the airport. Did I miss something?

As a rule of thumb, a high oil temperature indication shouldn't be a reason for concern unless it's accompanied by a drop in oil pressure. Whenever a discrepancy between these two parameters exists you should trust the pressure reading.

Time to armchair quarterback! Worse thing in the world is a "panicky" pilot who does not fully understand his/hers aircraft systems! Wrecked a perfectly good airplane! I have mixed feelings over these emergency chutes for airplanes. They should only be used as a last resort, to many of these low time pilots simply deploy the chute at the first sign of problems! As long as the engine was running, leave it alone and start climbing, some power is better than no power! You have to have "SOME" common sense AND full understanding of it's systems when operating the newer planes with the latest bells and whistles. Just saying! But main thing is no one was hurt which is great, you can always get another plane, but these type needless incidents sure put the hurt on the rest of us with higher insurance cost!

Every single time I have the aircraft serviced, I am on high alert and usually do about 3 flight missions around my home airport to test and monitor the flights before I consider a long flight with passengers.

So if he had gone full rich the engine would have come back? I know how he feels. I pulled my chute after picking up airplane from annual and loosing all oil pressure. Engine seized shortly there after. Pulled the chute a mile short of the runway at 500 feet. 2 oil lines came off in flight.
Read the report if interested. There is also a good you tube video with my conversation with atc where they confused and misledme.

Traditionally, when you get a high temperature you go full rich with fuel mixture to help cool things down. We'll have to see what the posted procedure is for that. It looks like a place you could do a forced landing because using the parachute is only to survive and destroy the airplane. Always look around for a place to land when flying that low especially.

I wish there were more simulators, and more affordable time in them for pilots. Imagine a sim game where all major types and models are represented, with the latest common failures.

Another perfect airplane trashed for nothing but a damaged sensor due to ignorance. Although I’d never step foot in a cirrus.

Right on, you don't get a spiking or concerning oil temperature it's slow very slow so that way you know it was a false indication and keep flying the airplane and land as soon as practical. Also there should be a maintenance flight following maintenance, don't just get in and go without somebody checking it out normally they take off and fly directly around the airport so they can return abruptly for any reason. So it sounds like a series of mistakes were made.

If you're going to lose your engine anyway, if it's still producing Power USE IT UNTILL IT QUITS!!

Did not have to deploy the chute. We pilot's deadstick land all the time. If you are a good pilot and see a place to land. Then land the plane and save the plane. I would pull a chute, but it would be the last option I had. If the plane can still fly then fly the plane. That area on google earth has lots of landing areas. Pilots are getting too reliant on Tech and chute. Engine dies pull shoot. A Pilot should be able to perform a deadstick if the land gives you options. I would also like to point out that this video's coverage of the story sucks. saying things like the shoot probably saved lives. There were no indications lives were in jeopardy. Also, say things like with no power no airspeed. You do not need the power to maintain your airspeed. it is called the best glide angle. Even at 1000 feet, you can easily glide a plane into an off-field landing. I think this was a case of a trash pilot not knowing his or her plane. Not enough exp to fly an SR22. Again new pilots are relying too much on new tech to fly the plane and chutes to save them when they don't understand the plane. pisses me off as it affects all pilots when fools fly. Yes, fools. you are a fool if you are not taking being a pilot seriously and getting the exp you need.
Honestly, how often do you hear of a plane crash due to high oil temps? One other thing. when you fly. fly as high as possible for the mission this gives you options. You don't know how many times I see planes flying over my area at minimum. WTF are they thinking?

All I can say is WOW! what an experienced pilot! LOL these are the guys pushing the aircraft industry insurance up hill...

I love your channel but on this occasion I feel I have to disagree with the title of your video. If I were the aircraft technician then I don’t think I’d be happy with that title. The failure of the oil temp. warning was a contributing factor but the cause of the accident was pilot error. I hope you can accept my comment in the spirit in which it’s intended. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s informative, interesting and entertaining at the same time. 👍

It goes to prove that people should not make use of mechanical machines if they do not have an understanding of the mechanics, in this case, the pilot most certainly adjusted the fuel mixture to lean (which by the way would increase the engine temperature) and lost power because of that. However, the maintenance technician should have tested the system before allowing the next flight to take off.

Another case of Murphy's law. Anything that can go wrong...will. Just be glad that the big red "OH CRAP" handle worked well this time.

I'm not a pilot but an instrumentation and control tech. That "bad connection" looks to me would cause a jumping "on/off" kind of reading that do not make sense with rising or falling temperature that will happen in a gradual fashion. OK, AGAIN, I'm not a pilot and do not know real aircraft. (Did flew RC long ago.) If the engine sounds good I'd really took a second or two to take stock of all happenings, sounds and readings before I panic. Fortunately for me every time I have been in a situation like that, I had my feet at ground altitude zero, so I only had to duck flying parts, IF they do start flying.

Erratic readings are almost never due to an engine problem. Experienced pilots suspect instrumentation problems and won't shut the engine down.

I'll amend my comment with this: There are many indications that would not be expected to fluctuate rapidly, and instrumentation problems would be a likely cause. Oil temperature is one of those. But I guess I should say that erratic oil pressure would be a reason to consider shutting down the engine.

My question is.. Why They deploy the parachute of they can make an emergency landing just normal. I mean without having to use the parachute. Non of the wing are broke. Just engine trouble. At least he dnt find a good spot for landing. But he can look around and find a good spot and not use the parachute. I dnt know the situation. We has to be there to know exactly what happen to give a better opinion. Thanks for the video mate. Have a good day
