Writing for Your Instrument ✍️🎶 (w/ Marcus Miller)

Whether holding it down in the studio or leading from the front with his band, Marcus Miller is one of the most heralded bass players on the planet.

An unbelievable soloist, a lyrical fretless player, Marcus wrote the rule book when it comes to playing in the pocket and has every technique imaginable under his fingers – but despite his stratospheric technical chops, his overriding legacy is one of laying down the groove and serving the song.

See you in the shed!!

Marcus is such a good musician that even when showing that bad example, he sounded good on it. That could have possibly confuse some people here who disagree with his message.

There's a fine line between 'playing other instruments on bass', and writing for bass.
A lot of YT stars are great at the former, but not the latter. The result is like an incredible sauce with no meal.
MM rightly credits Stanley, but he himself is an absolute Maestro at both sauce and meal. My favorite actually.

I had the pleasure of being a roommate for about 3 months with Stanley Clarks Nephew, he gave me a cassette of School Days by Stanley Clark and it quite literally expanded my mind by a ton in one sitting. I am a guitar player and he liked that, said here you can have this, He's my Uncle. I couldn't believe how much strength and speed and the chords and the bends, just everything blew me away. I knew I would get better over time, but to hear a man do that on a bass what I could not on a guitar left me awe struck. Didn't make me want to quit at all, it told me the road is infinite, and you choose how far to go. And Stanley was a God amongst ants. Took an instrument that was usually never playing solo's, or pretty short ones and proved to the world, Who has the best chops there are what? Yeah man, Stanley Clark had the greatest chops and heart and drive I have ever heard. Still to this day, I would put Stanley Clark as my favorite Bassist and Solo artist just from that on album School Days. There ain't no tellin how he got there, but I'll be damned if he isn't one of the greatest people to play any instrument ever. He broke ALL the rules. Bass player can't play lead of the band, uhhh, this Man can. Played with no pick, used his thumb and first, middle, and third finger with his right hand to pluck the strings. Always loved Victor Wooten, but Stanley built that bridge for him to cross. Stanley was so great, he could make rise feelings you never knew you had with his music. He absolutely lit that fire in my heart, and made me push harder at EVERYTHING!

I compose from the Bass. Then comes the drums, lead and rhythm guitars. Clavinett, electric piano, synthesizers, arp odyssey. Timbales and congas. Saxophone, trumpet, valve trombone, harmonica and flute. The bass playing and lead guitar playing on Funkadelic's "Cosmic Slop" is musical heaven.🎶🎸🎹🎷🎺🥁🎤🎻🎧.

That was very succinct and profound point he just made. It was stated in a perfect way.

For many, many years I have been listening to the wonderful music of Marcus Miller . He is my favorite bass player, also with the music of Luther Vandross. Greetings from Heidelberg / Germany

That last sentence was spot on👌
Where’s the funk? Why not funk?
Listen to 67-85, funkiest dynamic aggressive bass.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band did exactly that with Trout Mask Replica - one of the most influential experimental albums of all time. Don Van Vliet wrote all the scores on the piano and wasn't aware of the limits of the instruments - musically, it certainly shouldn't work, but somehow...it does.
I guess it depends on how much left-field/resilient your taste is. Marcus says a good idea nonetheless

Well said. Grew up playing drums listening to Stanley Clarke. Thru him I learned how to read and write drum scores. Alot of musicians don't know how to read and write sheet music. They are not celebrating like you said.❤️❤️❤️
