Joy From Christ, Not Your Performance - Paul Washer

A massive battle that many true Christians face is getting joy from their performance and not from Christ... this is something that only leads to misery and failure. By God's Grace alone may we all be truly, fully satisfied on what Christ has done, and stop focusing on ourselves.

I'll Be Honest, will you?

Christ's greatness is most clearly seen in His humiliation. Do you want to reach Heaven? - then you will have to go through the hell of humiliation! That is the price of Heaven! That is the price of exaltation - through humiliation. If you do not love humility, you are a proud monster!

Paul Washer opens with “I know Lord, there is no such things as a great man of God but only weak, pitiful, faithless men of the great, merciful God.” Then he prays for God’s Spirit to help him conform toward the likeness of Jesus. Then he adds “I’m so tired of just doing, reduced down how to how I perform and what I do...Jesus comes to me and says...to be conformed to My image”. “Everybody wants to do something when we ought to be wanting to be something”.
1) Romans 12:3 says “not to think of himself more than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.”
2) Paul says of himself and his companions in 1 Thessalonians 2:10 “you are witnesses, along with God, of how holy and righteous and blameless we behaved toward you who believe.”
3) David said:
Psalms 6:9 “vindicate me, YHVH, according to my righteousness and integrity in me.”
Psalms 16:2 “you are my Lord- I have no good apart from You.”
Psalms 17:3 “ You have examined my heart. You have searched me at night. Though You test me, You find nothing. I resolved that my mouth will not sin.”
Psalms 18:21 “ YHVH rewarded me for my righteousness. For the cleanness of my hands He repaid me.”
Psalm 25:11 “ For Your Name’s sake, YHVH, pardon my guilt for it is great.”
Psalm 25:18 “take away all my sins.”
Psalm 32:5 “then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said: “I confess my transgressions to YHVH, ” and You forgave the guilt of my sin.”

4) James 2:18 “show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my works.”

Be careful with false humility justifying their disobedience of God’s Laws and commandments.
Who imitates Jesus -who imitates God (Ephesians 5:1) or who conforms to His image?but the one who walks and does all He commanded.

Anyone else distracted by the music? Just give us the message, don't try to manipulate my emotions with music -- thanks! :)

I’m confused and troubled by this. The opener called something like over-sorrow for not getting it right idolatry, pointing to the only true joy as found in the finished work of Jesus - though holding up good sorrow that the Holy Spirit brings for not walking in the will of God.

Maybe it was how the video was cut. He seems to focus on whether we’re true believers by how much we practice spiritual disciplines. Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong, it is welcome.

But godliness when accompanied by contentment is a means of great gain. 1 Timothy Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means and I also know how to live in prosperity, in any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:11-13. Joy is a byproduct of contentment! It is the great gain spoken of in 1 Timothy 6:6. Then Christ Jesus is the only source of Joy! Happiness is conditional on our circumstances. Joy is not effected by circumstance. Just ask Paul & Silas in the middle of a Philippian jail! Acts 16: 22-40.
