The Yashica digiFILM Y35 Kickstarter is a JOKE! EPIC FAIL!

Yashica has announced a new camera via kickstarter campaign, but with the way the camera is currently designed you wont even be able to get usable pictures in daylight!

I paid $170 for what is essentially a toy camera. I have zero expectations. I doubt anyone backing this project is looking for anything professional to come out of it. People are buying this for its novelty. Thats it.

Great video! A friend sent me a link earlier today, knowing that I'd flip out over the Yashica name making a comeback. The promo video was not all that exciting and looking closer at the specs was disheartening to say the least. Then, I hit the comments section lol.
I do love the concept of the DigiFilm idea (even the requirement of "advancing the film" before the next shot works for me) and believe that if they can make the right adjustments and address certain issues then this had the potential to be a great, lasting product and who knows, might even have its own quirks like the original Diana/Polaroid cameras, or the higher quality rangefinders.
The interest is there, it's probably overwhelming in itself and because of that interest the company should bring in some old school know how from people who mighrt have worked for one of the big Japanese names back in the day. The investment would be worthwhile.
Anyway, thanks for the video and your comments. I'm going to keep a close eye on the campaign and stay hopeful, for now at least

Currently a backer of this project but honestly considering to cancel my pledge. I like the idea of it but as you mentioned it is probably better to wait and see the final product.
btw: i was under the influence when i pledged.

Being a Wedding Photographer ( 80's) I have 3 old Yashica's I used once in a while mainly the viewfinders were somewhat dark
indoors but great outdoors .  What bothers me is the Yashica's great name is now nothing more a thrashy toy . Sad

Thanks for the information. I own several old Yashica cameras and was really excited when I saw the kickstarter. I wanted this to be an awesome camera. I think I will do what you said and wait and see what the final version is.

Thank you sir for your well-informed video explaining the shortfalls of this Kickstarter project!
I run a film photographers meetup group in the UK where we hope to share and introduce people to the wonderful world of film photography.
I have shot with various Yashica film rangefinders over the years, Yashica Electro 35 GTN, Electro 35 GS, Lynx 5000, and Lynx 5000e I love them all.. and I am in complete agreement that this Kickstarter project does not live up to the reputation or heritage of the Yashica name.
There appears to be many vocal supporters wanting more from this new product.. much of which SHOULD be expected of a camera bearing the Yashica name, namely, an amazing, sharp fast lens, metal construction, coupled parallex corrected focussing, rangefinder patch, shutter priority, over and under exposed indicators, battery indicator.. and more..

I hope this company responsible for the Kickstarter reads these comments from their backers and watches this video. Yashica is a mark of quality, love for photography and prowess of design and user experience.

Please. If anyone is wanting to find out for themselves.. go out there and buy a cheap Yashica electro 35, pop some film in there.. shoot it, develop it, and appreciate the quality of what you will receive back and show your support that we as photographers want the same quality in their new Camera as Yashica have given us in the past.

We are not sure if the ISO on the digifilm is actually adjusting the ISO and not just to make grain/fine photos. it's just a digital sensor afterall.

Your comparison to how polaroid originals revealed the two step is exactly how they should have approached this.
The other thing is, the images we take are the real end product of any modern camera; to simply ignore that makes me know that the product is simply not worth having.

Was considering buying this since I love film Photography but developing all the film on my own is very time consuming juggling school & work doesn't give me much time to develop the film. So when I heard about this yashica camera I got excited but it sounded way too good to be true also the whole functionality of the camera seemed kind of wonky, but still have faith after coming across this vid really made not going to back this project thanks but for some reason my guts saying go for it but I don't know thanks great video keep it up man.

Backed it fully knowing all this just to see the updates and i'm sure at least 1/3rd of other backers did too. Yeah, the math totally doesn't make sense and i wanna see if they actually address it within the campaign time, which i doubt. My money is on either pushing the release date to 2019, delivering a toy camera and running off with the money, or just cancelling the whole thing.

before i backed this project, i have the same opinion with yours aswell, so i thought it would be fine to back and wait till D-1,
i thought i could use this for my daily use (for having fun), but as you mentioned the sensor is as large as the smartphone sensor, so it makes me think to cancel this, and then buy the real yashica 35 GSN, actually the real one, with 150$ could get beautiful condition

Just watched the unboxing, review, and “let’s take this shit apart” videos by the Point&ShootClub channel. Basically it’s a car dashcam board with a plastic lens, with a lot of air and some metal weights to make it feel more substantial, apart for the screws probably the only thing metal in this thing. Theirs broke after about 20 shots. I’d pay $5 for this at a junk shop for fun, with the expectation it lasts more than 20 shots, but certainly not as a toy for kids, as the parts that could break off are a choking hazard.

Great video, Cyrus. I was indeed very dissapointed that Yashica didn't go the full film route. Do check out Hamm Camera Company, we are developing a modern modular box camera that shoots 120 film (6x9).

Your argument is intelligent and clear-cut, but the title of the video would suggest otherwise.

I think it's pretty insane that they would have fixed aperture. To top that, they just changed it to be f2.0 lens instead once they reached a certain funding goal, so they essentially just added another stop of over exposure for fucks sake! I am honestly wondering if the fixed aperture thing is lost in translation? It doesn't make any sense.

I actually love the idea of it, even the digifilm bullshit. but I hate the execution so far. It's an experience camera, but what the hell are we supposed to do with a lens thats perpetually wide open? Give us the WHOLE experience...

was about to pledge, but then went into the comments just in case... glad I did, thanks man.

It would more of a fashion accessory than an actual utility camera, just like an iPhone! Nice video :)

this makes sense a small 1/3.2 sensor has a 7.61x crop. hence the f2.8 is not true however it is f21.3. so if your shutter speed would be something like 1/200.

äh, my iphone 6plus has a fixed aperture (2.8 i guess) and it works in daylight and inside. it changes the shutterspeed and the iso to adjust propper exposure. this works.

Will I do not think so, let's pretend that this camera is a semi-serious project. The exposure issue consuming this video can be addressed by issuing cartridges with very low ISO equivalents or by including a couple of cheap ND filters, which would not impair a viewfinder. I thought the Kickstarter project looked like a fraud, and now a year plus later, with no camera in deck, I remain of that opinion. I think the promoters of this thing are now in the phase where they stepped out the promotional limelight, volunteer no new projections of future progress, and hope that the backers get tired of waiting and just fade away.
