The idea that Luck and hard work are at odds is a misunderstanding of determinism. Being a person that works hard is _also_ a product of luck/chance. You must have the biological composition to want to work hard. You must have had the experiences that teach you to work hard. If you keep asking yourself "why do I do this/that?" and "where did that thought come from?", And just keep asking yourself these two questions to each answer, even if you think you've come to the end of the line... You discover that you're not responsible for creating yourself or your desires, motivation, drive, etc, etc. This doesn't mean you should throw your hands in the air, because youll most likely still have the desire to survive, and youll still have your wants in life... But youll see that you didn't choose to have those wants, etc. They're thrusted upon us by nature, or whatever else is responsible for it.
