I have the answer:

10% luck
20% skill
15% concentrated power of will
5% pleasure
50% pain
And 100% reason to make people salty

Luck is the result when preparation meets opportunity as a result of hard work

Luck is something out of your control. Hard work is not. That's why the best advice is to focus on what *you* can control, and you deal with the stuff you cannot.

Dave, I grew up in a household that barely broke 30k a year, father went to prison when I was 16 which was the same year I ended up having my first child and dropping out of high school.

I made the choice that enough was enough and I wasn't going to settle for the life I was "born into" (as some people would claim). I joined the Army, got my GED, went to college and long story short I earn well over 6 figures. There is no such thing as luck, it's all hard work and persistence that makes you successful.

I love your show because one thing I wasn't taught was how to manage money. I could sit back and say, "nobody ever told me" and blow all of the money I earn. Instead I am looking high and low for the knowledge to help me be more successful. I'm 29 years old and I am making more than any of my family I know. I don't plan on stopping here. Thank you for your guidance and wisdom!

Luck is not blind. Hard work, planning, and execution to follow through with perseverance determines success after overcoming short-term failures.

Wealthy people look at the future. Non-wealthy people look at the present. I've never met a wealthy person who has said "live the present" or "yolo". It's all about what is going to happen tomorrow. That doesn't mean wealthy people are happier, it just means they're wealthy because they plan for the future instead of focusing on today.

It's amazing how much the audio quality of this show has improved in just five years.

Exactly. Basically he's trying to deny that luck has anything to do with success, when its clear that it does. He's trying to say that athletes and farmers are based on the same "hard work" principle. Thats bullshit. He also ignores the fact that some of the people that work the hardest still are unable to escape the cycle of poverty.

He just runs roughshod over that.

Luck definitely has a role to play in addition to hard work

Both. Hard work and Luck are both important.

I think the article calling it "luck" was dumb, but that doesn't change the fact that different people have different opportunities. No Bill Gates' wealth wasn't built from luck, but he did have the opportunity to start playing around with computers and coding at a very young age (when access was much more limited than it is now). Dave's daughters have a responsible and invested father, which allowed them the opportunity to learn about how they should be treated in relationships. Michael Jordan was able to better his skills on the basketball court by dedicating time to practice after not being accepted on to his high school's varsity team because he didn't have to take on an extra job during high school to help pay for his family's bills. Of course, people can overcome the lack of opportunity by sheer force of will, but that doesn't mean the barrier to entry isn't higher for some than others.

Luck may occasionally get you wealth but it will NEVER build wealth

My first violin teacher, back 30 years ago, told me, warned me?, only 10% is talent, the rest is HARD WORK. Boy was she right. I see people, I play sitting beside people who are far better violinists then I am and I know it's not luck, it's not all talent but they put in long hard hours working at it. It's called practice!!!

You create your own 'luck' by working hard.

"This is 10% luck, 20% skill,

5% pleasure, 50% pain,
And a 100% reason to remember the name!" - Fort Minor

The only wrong answer is to over-simplify the issue.
Hard work plays a factor. Luck plays a factor. You can "create your own luck" by working hard, but sometimes your hard work can be taken away if you have bad luck.
People do not have equal opportunities in America and you have to be willfully ignorant to deny that. At the same time, America is one of the best places in the world to create a better life for yourself. We should acknowledge that not everyone is afforded the same opportunities while taking steps to improve our own lives the best we can.
