12 Hideous But Inventive And Hilarious AAAHH!!! Real Monsters Creatures - Backstories Explored

One of Nickelodeon’s finest, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters is an underrated gem. Klasky Csupo, Inc. developed this iconic cartoon in the 90s.
For those born in the 90s who weren’t lucky enough to catch the show on TV while it was being aired, thanks to several streaming sites you can finally hop onto the bandwagon and experience AAAHH!!! Real Monsters in all of its glory.
Judging by its name, it’s not a secret that the show is about monsters. But it’s not your regular heroes versus villains theme. In fact, the show is conceptually pretty unique. It highlights four monsters, in particular, namely, Ickis, Krumm, Oblina, and Gromble. They are young monsters attending a school for monsters called The Monster Academy, located under a city dump. That’s where they learn to frighten humans.
The monsters have exciting character designs that stay loyal to what Western animation stands for - exaggerated caricatures.
Much of the show revolves around the best friends Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm coming to the surface from the city dump and performing ‘scares’ on people. This is funnily a part of their class assignment, and the monsters want to please Headmaster Gromble. Hearing things like this makes me regret my human status because math was scarier than anything a monster can ever be. I’d rather perform scares than be scared by the introduction of letters into my math syllabus.
The show hosts a variety of creative creatures and in this video, we are going to talk about twelve such grotesque but hilarious monsters in no particular order. So, let’s get down to it!

This is one of my favorite nicktoons. I remember coming home from school watching this show everyday on Nicktoons. This show needs to come back with new episodes to either Nickelodeon, Paramount Plus or Netflix.

This is my all time favourite cartoon ever! It’s so well done, from each character and their “scare” ability, to the way they interact with the human world and the way their own world works. I always thought that this cartoon never got the recognition and appreciation it should have and believe it went over a lot of people’s heads… but then the best ones do!

I love this show! I found the complete series on dvd at Walmart years ago for $20. Also got the full series of Rocko’s Modern Life for the same price.

I feel like it's shows like this, Beetlejuice, Freakazoid and Billy and Mandy that lead to quite a few Millennials being as weird as we are. lol I think that Ickis is adorable and Oblina is such a brain, Krum is a very interesting concept of a character, he reminds me of Stinky from Casper. I feel like if there was a cross over with Beetlejuice Lydia would like them and they'd get along great with BJ. Lydia would be like the only human that they wouldn't ever be able to scare but I'm sure that she wouldn't be against them scaring the crap out of Claire XD. I thought that Gromble was voiced by Tim Curry for a while but I was wrong, it's Gregg Burger, but Tim Curry DID do a voice and that was Zimbo. SMASHING! LMAO I love this show so much.

Along with Invader Zim, this has always been my favourite Nicktoon. It was mainly the great comradery between the three main characters that made the show so rewatchable to me

Very original and better than what Monsters, inc. turned itself into.
This showed what monsters could really be, and pushed the shapes and powers a monster who belongs to no known species could really do. How truly different they are from humanity. The humor wasn’t dumbed down and left it up to your imagination. You don’t get anything like this on tv anymore. And it still had plenty of potential to offer, too.

There is one monster I think you should have totally mentioned in this list and that is Plastoog. He is pretty much the human look alike monster that is mocked and made fun of because of his face even though all of his other appendages are very monster like. He is really great friends with the Gromble which is another episode where we get to see a more redeemable side of his character explaining that it's not how you look as a monster it's how you scare. I think the episode with Plastoog was one of my favorite episodes in the series.
