To the curious mind who thinks that software industry punishes people over 40, here is my analysis of what I have seen so far!. Here, I have tried to answer the very basic question of what happens to software engineers after the age of 40!

Here, I went through 5 different scenarios that typically happens in the career of a software engineer when they are 15-20 years of experience.

Apart from that, I also tried to explain the concept of FIRE (Financial Independence Retire early.)

Do show some love!

I can tell you from my experience. I am above 40 now and all my colleagues are above 40. Nothing happens much, you just get more responsibility, you keep clearing mess that younger ones has created in code and you also speak with stakeholders all times. You understand architecture better and look at bigger picture. Software industry embraces all.

No company in the world (private company) will ever terminate anyone based on age. I was in a India MNC 1 year ago and i had 3 collegues who are 45 43 46 who does Development. 2 Senior managers around 48-49 who were learning Cloud computing.
I moved to abroad now and shocked to see 22-23 years experience aged 45-46 senior software engineer.
If you are good and active in your Work always private industries welcomes you because its end of the day business.
Indian IT had hierarchy issue 10-12 yeaea ago . It is changing now.
I have a colleague works out of Russia location 58 years of age he is a Software engineer.

Imposter syndrome also hits at such age since you will see younger people with better knowledge in new age tech.

After 40 only pressure increases and responsibilities increase both at job and home. Health also becomes an issue. Deliverables become more difficult. But people dont become jobless in IT. Its only more stress if one can handle it, no problems. Most people I know in IT (who are above 40) are planning intentional retirement by 50. Just because they dont want to to deal with this pressure or stress and they have enough money.

54 and still writing code, just as a member of the staff, but I understand what you're saying about ageism, it has more to do with lack of energy to keep on learning new things and the mental stamina to take on stressful projects (even just weekly assignments), there is a sense of overly stressed or even burned out quickly, than any form of 'discriminating' me based on age. But I do wonder how long can I take the 'stresses' of coding etc. Learning new things I still enjoy and open to try new things, as if, I never left my first job, always learning, but body/mind catches up with age. I can not into climbing the ladder, 'member of the team' is what I have been all these years, so once done with coding, next I don't know, here in Canada retirement is 67, can't imagine debugging at 67, so may be ta 60 retire from s/w and rest and pass time with a different career and and easier job, for 25% the s/w pay.

Companies like Congnizant, TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Infosys hardly fire employees.
In TCS I have seen 55 years old working without any such knowledge and hardly got any promotion.
Also in Congnizant I have seen same thing.

The only advantage according to me that service based company has over product based company is greater job security and this becomes even more important after the age of 40. Period.

Edit : when I commented 8 months ago about Amazon, everyone laughed. What is the situation today as of May 2023.

In software company your dedication generally more towards company /career of yours. From 24 to 60 years, you continuously learning, dedicated, try to become, I am the best in best company, Only one question for which what you get "10% to 30%" higher salary ? It means you are pledged your soul and entire 36 years for 10 to 30% more salary ? The pledge of soul includes your life, joy, happiness. Just think "Jindagi naa aave dubaara". Your youth, your wiife, the days you want to play with you kid, pet never comes in Software, if you pledge your Soul.

It is extremely unlikely for a 35 year old manager to hire a 50 year old software engineer. That's the real reason IT workers have an expiration date. Nothing else matters.

I seriously don't understand why an organization fire employee who becomes little slow because of age because honestly a 40 year old has many responsibility and duties outside work. If you expected employee to work whole day that's just bad morality

Govt salary 45k as 10+2 teacher in village vs 1.32lakh in metro city as software developer per months what should choose and best job ?

The reason people don't see old software engineers because software engineering at big scale is relatively newer than other professions. Since it's newer profession there are very less old people here. As time progresses you guys will see more old software engineers.

A much needed video. Thanks a lot sir. Even my college teacher was saying the last week that we might be jobless after 45 years age. Your video really cleared a lot of doubts for us.

This video was insightful. I'm a 12 years experienced software developer. I have lost passion for programming and want to move on to managerial role like Techinical Product manager or Project Manager. But unfortunately I'm getting senior developer roles which i hate it to the core. I tried get a transfer with org i work with but due to management, my team was let go. Any software professionals who has transitioned into non programming roles, please guide me as i'm just working as dev just for the sake of money without any interest in work. please help!!
