The Sketchbook Method (Get Better at Sound Design)

In all my years of teaching and helping sound designers, I see so few people actually practice the actual craft of sound design.

And I get it! It's such a mysterious and weird art form, and we assume we need to share everything that we create. Thankfully, though, we can just do what artists do and create tons and tons of "sketches" - little practice sounds that are never ever meant to see the light of day.

100%! And you can even end up getting some nice samples from it that you can use in actual work! That's mostly where my "Style" layer comes from these days haha

keep up t he grind akkash you're killing it!!

Btw, I recently got a job, and I did a sound effect that had a few layers (kinda like a baby version of your portal sound effect) - and the contractor asked me to make two variations, but not simply changing the pitch. Doesnt this mean I am making three sounds for the price of one?
I understand if he wants three footstep variations because thats a lot easier to do, but a whole designed sound for an object in his game, to make new variations feels like something I should be paid extra for?
How would you react if you were asked for two more variations of the portal sound but not simply a pitch shift? Would you re-negotiate? Or is there another way of making variations other than pitch shifting that im unaware of?
Thank you!!
