The mysterious death of Knut the polar bear

CBS News correspondent and resident veterinarian Dr. Debbye Turner Bell reports on the surprise death of one of the stars of the Berlin Zoo - Knut, the polar bear.

RIP Knut! So sweet and beautiful! I agree,  Knut must have missed Thomas. Thomas was his mother, father and friend.

Man this is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. You can tell in a lot of this footage he just wants to interact with the people that are around him. Just the thought that he might have died of loneliness in a sense is heart-breaking.

This lady tried to argue he died from going insane? Years later it was discovered he had a swollen brain disease. Thats why he would shake and pace. I think that woman is insane.

He was missing his keepers and the human contact. So sad.

he wasn't "insane" from the captivity, he just had the same disease as anneliese michel. of course it did not manifest as an exorcism but he started to have a seizure, and fell into the water. he eventually drowned. the disease is so obscure in the field (there are at least 1 million cases but otherwise not many hear of it) and obviously, both knut and anneliese michel did not get the correct treatments. so unfortunately they died

Knut missed his Papa, died of long term depression and heart broken.

I have the book about Knut and his story. I will really miss that little guy :-(

The necropsy showed Knut officially died from drowning while having a seizure, but was the seizure was caused by encephalitis (swelling in the brain) secondary to an infection. The vets said that even if he hadn't fallen in the water he would not have survived.

It is always tragic when any creature passes on. What we have to remember that there iis heaven and G-d takes care of all those animals. Each one now no longer suffers yet romps and plays with others domestic or wild animals live on

Your right a mother will kill her young if she believes he will suffer in life. Its a sad fact but its an act of compassion to them.

@MeistroBlue I think you might be wrong, I think the death of Knut died due to a bad case of heartbreak because of the death of his trainer. You might think it's crazy to think animals dying due to heartbreak but when an elephant finds a mate and it dies the widow sometimes won't eat and just won't stand up and it dies. Due to a bad case of heartbreak.

I can't believe those animal activists have the guts to blame the zoo for Knuts death. If it wasn't for the zoo, he would have died like his twin brother 4 years ago.

This is truly sad news.

It was brain damage and he drowned I know because I read the book it was terrible
