The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C., promising the federal bureau will leave “no stone unturned” in its ongoing investigation into the July 13 assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump.
“The shooter may be deceased, but the FBI's investigation is very much ongoing,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told the congressional panel on Wednesday. “I have been saying for some time now that we are living in an elevated threat environment and tragically, the Butler County assassination attempt is another example – a particularly heinous and very public one of what I've been talking about,” he added.
Asked to confirm if since-deceased shooting suspect Matthew Thomas Crooks fired eight shots during the shooting in Butler, Penn., Wray said the FBI had “recovered eight cartridges on the roof,” of where he was found – approximately 400 ft away from the stage at Trump’s rally.
Additionally, Wray confirmed Crooks had three explosives – two in his car and one in his residence – and that he was flying a drone “about 200 yards away” from the rally stage prior to the attack.
Narrowly avoiding death, Trump was shot in the ear that day. Protecting his family, one rally attendee was killed, while two others were wounded. Crooks was swiftly killed by law enforcement. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as the FBI’s investigation continues.
