On July 7th 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Dallas, Texas, that shook the nation. During a peaceful protest against police violence, a lone gunman carried out an ambush targeting law enforcement officers. This attack occurred in the wake of highly publicized incidents involving two controversial police shootings , which had sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform.

As protesters marched through downtown Dallas, their chants were quickly shattered by gunfire.

The gunman, positioned himself high above, and began targeting police officers, indiscriminately firing at them from a hidden vantage point. Chaos ensued as officers and civilians alike scrambled for safety.

Four hours later, a tense standoff unfolded as law enforcement worked to negotiate with the suspect. However, the suspect refused to cooperate, leading to a historic call by Dallas Police Chief Brown.

In memory of the fallen.

Dallas PD had their HQ attacked the previous year by a gunman armed with an AK-47 who used an armored van as cover. He got taken out by a SWAT sniper using a personal .50 BMG anti-material rifle.

Man, Dallas sure does have an issue with snipers in buildings storing books.

I worked with Brent Thompson, and I remember seeing him in the hallway I walked by him and told him "Be careful out there" I didn't know that would be the last time I would see him. RIP Brent

Don’t forget to mention that the government didn’t follow their own laws to document his issues.

You are a criminally underrated channel. My heart swells with pride for my country each time you drop a video. It’s incredible, an art for really, how you’re able to capture the raw grit and stakes of a situation, emphasize the heroics and badassery of those involved, and wrap it up in a respectful and honorable way. Props you sir, I hope to see your channel continue to grow.

Hey PopoMedic.
You did an excellent job producing this documentary. Well put together, easy to follow, suspenseful, killer audio score, and really created a lot of empathy.
Keep it up

It's hard to believe that there were people at the time cheering this guy on and others decrying the use of explosives on a citizen of the US "instead of just arresting him".

I work in security and I've been ripped for this so many times "you can't wear an outer vest, it's too intimidating". I'm so sick of hearing this bullshit, last boss told me that I told him ok come do a ride along with me with no vest and see how fast you change your mind. To security and police out there, if you work a job that requires a gun in a sketch district, fuck your co or field sup, it ain't his ass wind up in a pine box at the end of the day, wear your ppe. If they don't like it, hire a lawyer and sue the company or department for osha and L&I violations. Outdated or mindless policy isn't worth your life.

Just something I want to add - not directed towards anybody specifically: you can be anti-cop all you want, but don't glorify shitty people when you do so, and don't be that shitty person; it's self- destructive.

Lorne Ahrens, he answered that call. So did his wife, Katrina -- not only because she was the spouse of a police officer, but because she’s a detective on the force. They have two kids. And Lorne took them fishing, and used to proudly go to their school in uniform. And the night before he died, he bought dinner for a homeless man. And the next night, Katrina had to tell their children that their dad was gone. “They don’t get it yet, ” their grandma said. “They don’t know what to do quite yet.”

Michael Krol answered that call. His mother said, “He knew the dangers of the job, but he never shied away from his duty.” He came a thousand miles from his home state of Michigan to be a cop in Dallas, telling his family, “This is something I wanted to do.” Last year, he brought his girlfriend back to Detroit for Thanksgiving, and it was the last time he’d see his family.

Michael Smith answered that call -- in the Army, and over almost 30 years working for the Dallas Police Association, which gave him the appropriately named “Cops Cop” award. A man of deep faith, when he was off duty, he could be found at church or playing softball with his two girls. Today, his girls have lost their dad, for God has called Michael home.

Patrick Zamarripa, he answered that call. Just 32, a former altar boy who served in the Navy and dreamed of being a cop. He liked to post videos of himself and his kids on social media. And on Thursday night, while Patrick went to work, his partner Kristy posted a photo of her and their daughter at a Texas Rangers game, and tagged her partner so that he could see it while on duty.

Brent Thompson answered that call. He served his country as a Marine. And years later, as a contractor, he spent time in some of the most dangerous parts of Iraq and Afghanistan. And then a few years ago, he settled down here in Dallas for a new life of service as a transit cop. And just about two weeks ago, he married a fellow officer, their whole life together waiting before them.

For such a historic incident, it’s honestly sad how few people remember this. Most of my cop buddies here in California only have a very vague knowledge that this even occurred, and the vast majority of people don’t even know it happened. Everyone knows the name of George Floyd, however nobody knows the name of these cops who have done infinitely more for their communities.

Society, ladies and gentlemen.

I remember being on foot patrol the next night in a whole other state. I was in a populated area and people were coming up to me and my partner and threatening us “I hope you die like the ones in Dallas” etc. There was a mass threat on all officers in the state and we had to work in pairs.

I had forgotten they played the same games in 2016 that they did 2020. Thanks for the reminder.

I was working as a charge nurse in the ER at Parkland that night. SWAT showed up and locked the building down as we took in several of the officers. Was a very intense night I will never forget.
