I was about 6 or 7 years old riding in the car with my father when this song came on the AM radio. I will never forget that day. I’m 67 now. I thanked him for not naming me Sue.

He first preformed this song for the inmates at San Quinton. He's a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Great reaction

Good one, Mugs! He could tell a story, couldn't he? Thanks for sharing this.

The tempo was faster and he talked a lot more in this version than in the original. And he ended it differently. You have to go find the original audio recording and listen to it.

The live from Folsom Prison version is the best.

I grew up on this music and I adore that you describe it as rap 🧡 I'm early in my hip-hop/rap education. That's how I discovered you. I'm learning we certainly have more in common than we know 🧡

One of my favourite songs is a kid growing up in the 60s in the deep South of Australia. ☕️🦘 out.

Johnny Cash’s songs have a way of bringing out all sorts of feelings, from humor to happy Too sad and deep. His delivery on this is kind of like rap I suppose. Love the way he goes from a sing-song talking delivery to a full singing voice. That man could sing anything!!

This was much faster than the original, probably because the audience started clapping too fast, and he was forced to roll with it.

You want BADASS watch the LIVE from Folsom Prison! It's called STORY Country, Western and Blue Grass are all story telling . Blue Grass tends to be tragedy. The song You Are My Sunshine is Blue Grass most sing it as a lullabye to their child but it's actually originally a tragic tale. Try The Dead South - You Are My Sunshine ...chills. Great modern band from Canada they broke out with In Hell I'll be in Good Company.

I highly recommend you listen to the album version of the song. Sometimes live versions don't really do the songs justice because of all the background noise. :)

In Classic Country it was known as a recitation song. There are many of them. My favorite is Donna Fargo, "That was yesterday."
Then there's
Red Sovine
"Teddy Bear, "
"Phantom 309"
"Little Rosa"
Gitty up go."
C. W. McCall
"Convoy, "
"Classified, "
"Wolf creek pass, "
"Old home filler up & keep on truckin' cafe."
David Allen Cole
"The ride"
Tex Ritter
"The deck of cards"
Jimmy Dean
"Big Bad John"
That's just a few if you want to hear more.
A lot of truck driving & c.b. radio songs.

It was all called Country Western Music way back.. whatever the regional type.
The Western was Cowboys. The rap was Storytellin'.

The cadence of Johnny's vocals and the music arrangement makes this a Ballad.

Some call it “spoken interlude” and some call it “spoken word”. You get another beautiful spoken interlude song in “Believe “ by Brooks and Dunn. Perfection!
