The DNA of the Quake engine runs deep. Source 2 is a direct descendant of it (Quake -> Quake II -> GoldSrc -> Source -> Source 2), as is idTech 7 that runs Doom Eternal, as is every single CoD engine via Quake III, which itself was the engine that ran the famous Jedi Knight series, even Titanfall 2 (which is based on the L4D upgrades to Source) and Apex Legends trace their engines back to Quake

the amazing thing is that it is still used in some popular modern games like apex legends wich has amazing movement because of it but it can be a bit janky and buggy sometimes aspecially with audio

the minimum requirements for source games make unity shake in it's boots. one pc can play hl2 at 200fps and just barely play a unity game in 720p. when playing a source game, i never have to worry about performance or even appearance.

This is not accurate. GoldSrc is based on Quake 1 engine with some fixes backported from the in-development Quake 2 engine.

Source engine was a great engine, but only Valve uses it. It was made by Valve, for Valve.

The engine didn't split into GoldSrc and Source after Half Life, Half Life's engine, which was modified Quake 2's was already called GoldSrc.

Then with the release of Half Life 2 the engine was rewritten on C++ and was called Source. They were never worked with by Valve alongside each other unless I am missing some of their obscure games.

And Source 2, unlike Source and it's every version, has no relation to Id software's work as it was rewritten from scratch yet again specifically to go away from the old engine architecture that was characteristic of Id software's engines as it no longer provides much benefit while limiting the productivity of the developers. They are putting old Source mechanics into specific Source 2 games so that they retain their gameplay.

edit: Also, Quake didn't introduce true 3D, it was already a thing, it just made real time 3D possible to do with actually big and complex levels by using BSP. What this meant is that developers didn't need to create levels with optimization in mind. All they had to do was create them with BSP in mind so it can do all the work for them. Which btw was already a thing in Doom, just in 2D instead of 3D.
