Dr. Broome: What is avascular necrosis of the hip? So this is a very common term that a lot of people haven't heard about if you're not in the medical field. What this is, is a condition where a portion of the ball and the hip has lost its blood supply. And then what happens is you develop this large cyst underneath the joint surface in the bone. If it's caught early enough, there are ways that we can actually go in there and decompress the cyst, and hopefully bring about some healings. Unfortunately, more often than not, by the time people are diagnosed with this condition, it's advanced futher, and if that cyst actually gets large enough, it can weaken the bone and it can collapse. Unfortunately, this happens too often in people who are very young and very active, and they feel like they may be too young to have this treatment. That's not necessarily true nowadays.
