In this video I look at the two different grass types that I grow in my yard. My back yard has Perennial Ryegrass while my front yard has Kentucky Bluegrass. We look at the differences between texture, color, striping, growth patterns, germination, and disease.

I have been watching YouTube for years now and I have to say your lawn front and back are right up there with the best I have ever seen. I am partial to KBG but they both look amazing. Well done sir.

Awesome insight Aaron!
Kbg has been getting a lot of hate lately, I’m glad to see prg has some of the same issues!

Absolutely a YouTuber after my own heart. I was gonna over seed 5 iron p.r.g. over my kgb. Love the blue grass. Scotts and midnight mix. Looks good but even after 1.5 years still spotty. Like to have the best of both worlds. Just figured in 2 years I'd over seed with midnight again. Love this vid. Dude

Thanks for the video. I'm redoing my front yard and bought the seed superstore KBG mix with the three types. Then I saw a bunch of YouTubers using barenbrug's rpr and started regretting my decision. This makes me feel more confident in my choice!

Another good video. Just commented on your KB overseed video. Still struggling whether to renovate my new KB sod that struggled this summer with KB or Rye. I really like how quick Rye grass establishes. I’m sick of seeing all the dry brown Kb that I’ve been looking at since June

Great video. I’m about to put down regenerating perennial rye by Barenbrug down mixed in with my KBG. Hope they both compete to make a nice thick yard. Maybe something for you to consider. Mono strains are cool but each grass has its strengths and weaknesses

Both front and back look phenomenal. I love KBG and have Bluebank KBG out front. I'm curious to mix some PGR in the back. Tried some barenbrug RPR in spring but didnt work out well. Might try the SS9000 in the fall.

I use a 50/50 rye kbg here east central Iowa, which is very popular around to use. Does well over the winter and use try to keep moist during the hot summer days.

Again your lawn looks amazing as always. I noticed at the beginning of the clip you have the same issue as me when cutting across the grain. It pulls the Swardman in different directions making it hard keeping the stripes straight. That’s the only down side I think of the Swardman being so light.

Love the video! Thank you for the comparison.
Think I may do both mixed together and see how it comes out.
What reel mower are you using? Interested in learning about it.

I’m with you on all your points. With that said you should add in some RPR to your ryegrass. All the pros of rye but it spreads and fills in bare spots itself like KBG.

I love perennial ryegrass for so many reasons and one big one is how well it stripes like you said. I live in vancouver, BC and it seems to really thrive here with our widely variable climate and lots of rain. Yes it doesn't have rhizomes like KBG but it doesn't need them with how quickly it germinates and establishes which makes overseeding ridiculously easy while still producing incredible results. Mow it tall in the summer and it's also decently heat and drought resistent and can be kept up with hand watering. One issue I have though which seems to be the opposite of your problem is mine is too thick with how often I overseed and it almost ends up choking itself off, I have to dethatch a couple times a year.

Beautiful lawn!! What variety of Kentucky Bluegrass did you use on your front lawn? I was disappointed with my front lawn renovation last fall. I used a premium seed 50% Kentucky Blue 50% perennial rye. And after 7 weeks I am still trying to get rid of all the perennial rye seed stalks and stems. It gives my lawn a brown cast. Next month I would like to overseed with Kentucky Blue seed with the darkest color I can find.

what reel mower was that in the beginning of the video?

great info!!! this Spring I tried 70% KBG & 30%PRG mix seeds. I wasnt very sure what grass types my previous home owner was seeding..prob TTTF/Fine fescue/PRG/CRF/KBG all mixed.. to have a better result with my seeds, I know I should be doing a full renovation, , it's just look like it is a so much work n I would need to take vacation days 🥴 after looking at your video, it made me think I should definitely try reno at some point!
