The fight to save the African penguin | BBC News

Every year there are fewer African penguins and soon there may be none at all.

Conservationists primarily blame the fishing industry for the decline in numbers, as penguins depend on the sardines and anchovies they catch and sell.

But fishermen say they are “a fraction of the problem”, as there are there factors like climate change and vulnerability to natural predators involved.

While the South African government have previously tried to restrict fishing activities, it is estimated that there are now only 8,750 penguin breeding pairs left in the country.

This has led conservation groups to take legal action against the government in the first case of its kind in South Africa.

As a Cape Town resident, it's clear that expanding the conservation zone is essential for preserving our natural environment. Interestingly, tourism in Cape Town offers more employment opportunities than fishing. By prioritizing nature conservation over fishing quotas, we not only protect the African penguins but also support the local economy through a thriving tourism sector.

Rhino, elephant, penguin. Such a blessed country, and so careless of it.

Why don’t we just farm-raise anchovies and such in the billions to replenish the population? Is that detrimental to nature?

Penguins are important but it seems the main stream media do not want to report of the withdrawal of the Astra Zeneca “ thing “ because of the harm it has caused . What a disgrace !
