I'm from Mississippi, and honestly I've been watching northerners try to teach people how to do a southern accent, and I've never laughed harder. Seriously, it's great.

Haha, actually as a Southerner myself, "bless your heart" can be a sincere expression of sympathy. But yeah you can definitely use it as a back handed remark lol.

My first week in Kentucky I would end the day with a headache. I had a very hard time understanding people.

I will say an upside was that I really had the opportunity to work on my listening skills. So often we half listen while thinking what we are going to say next. Having to really consentrate on what people were saying forces you to pay attention to people and helps you form greater connections. People really appreciate when you actually listen to what they are saying.

I was raised in both the north and south so depending who I'm around I'll switch up my accent. I think that's why I'm good at hearing and imitating accents (American wise). Most of my family's accent splits between Midwestern, Northern, and Southern.

I'm from the South ... living in New England the last 17 years. This was fun to hear! haha!!! (and there are many different Southern accents) ... even in my native state of Tennessee there is a difference from East, Middle and West. East is Appalachian and West is more Deep South. Middle is ... well, unique. I think Nashville has its own accent. Thanks for sharing this ... I enjoyed it! Now I'm fixin' to sign out of here ;o)

I've never left the south and let me just say;

they got it but they kinda don't.

One unusual thing I noticed on visiting Atlanta years ago was the variety of dialects I heard in the course of a couple days. Of course there were a number of different regional accents, but there were also international accents from different parts of Europe and Asia. Very cool!

Wow, they can't do these accents at all.

I don't have a southern accent myself but half my family does and I heard it all my life. Born and raised in TN

When he was saying "fixin" I didn't even know what part of that statement was southern until he pointed it out 🤣 It just sounded normal to me lol

I’m in Arkansas and we all have very different southern accents. In Arkansas alone we have at least 5 different accents. We have a lot of shortcuts in our slang words. OwUdoin, fixnto, derntootin, Norlins, sinsyouseup, yeppers, youanna go, how you been, all the fixins, goin, doin, duno ul(oil) and many more I don’t realize I use.

My Father was from West Virginia working in the CCC camp(ask your Grand-parants) in Idaho during the depression. When he met my Mother he told her people in Idaho were crazy. He said he was walking when a woman pulled her car over and asked him for directions to a store. He gave her the directions and finished with, "It's a good piece up the road". She slapped him. There was definitely a cultural divide. True story.
