You are absolutely right!

Food banks throw away food that doesn't get used because people do not know how to cook it!

I first time I was exposed to this detail of modern American life..."can't cook syndrome"..was on vacation.

Me and a friend went from York, Pennsylvania to Las Vegas, Nevada for a 5-day vacation. (Mommy trip away from husbands and Kids! )

In order to save money on our trip, we rented a condo that had a kitchen. This kitchen was stocked with limited kitchen supplies and we decided that we would cook the majority of our meals in our room.

We had a grocery store directly across the street from our condo and we went over to look at prices and pick up supplies. Much to our surprise all the convenience food was extremely expensive, probably double and triple the price that we would pay back home but regular food was extremely dirt cheap.

This wasn't a problem for us. We were a couple of country girls. We knew how to cook. We were standing at the meat counter looking at about half of a pork loin and it was like $3.50. $3.50 for the entire pork loin. Not by the pound.

So we were standing there discussing what we could do with this pork loin. how we could divide it up and make four good dinners for two women for the rest of our trip.

There was middle-aged couple standing next to us and they were listening. They grew increasingly intent on listening to our conversation and the gentleman finally leaned in and said "ladies how do you cook that"?

We begin having a conversation with his couple about how we were going to cook this pork loin into several meals. Come to find out they lived in Vegas and they said that they don't see these cuts of meat in the store because nobody knew how to cook it. They couldn't even tell us what animal it was from. Then more people started listening. We developed a crowd. Five different sets of people purchase pork loin that day planning to cook it how we had told them to.

We could have held a cooking class right in the middle of the store. They were clueless.

The last time I was exposed to this detail of modern American life...can't cook syndrome..was just a few weeks ago.

I stop into a Dollar General to grab some ingredients for s'mores. We were burning some scrap wood and old tree limbs and we didn't have any marshmallows or chocolate. So we just dropped to the local Dollar general to pick up s'mores ingredients. I got behind a lady who had an entire cart full of junk food. I thought wow! That's a lot of crap. Try not to judge because I was standing there with marshmallows and graham crackers and chocolate bars.

Deep down in my head I thought "I bet She will use food stamps" I kind of felt bad because I was prejudging people and I thought you know I should say a penance for even having the thought.. so I waited in line behind her as she unloaded six cases of soda pop, five different bags of potato chips, microwave popcorn, K-Cups, candy bars, frozen dinner's, frozen pizzas, a few hamburger helper type meals. Nothing in that cart I would consider as food.

Guess what? She pulled out she food stamp access credit card and paid $249 for this entire cart of junk. The whole time she was complaining of how expensive it was to raise kids. And we wonder why we have a health care crisis in this country.

PEOPLE CAN'T COOK.

Keep up the good work ninja!

After reading a few of these comments, I continue to be convinced that there is no food shortage on this planet. There’s plenty of food. Nature is beyond abundant. The problem is administration, government regulation, people, afraid of being sued for bad product, and on and on.

I take my extra chicken eggs to the food bank, they give me boxes of food every week. No fancy meats or cheeses, but as a senior single woman, I appreciate everything they give me. Food has gotten so expensive I try only to shop sales and grow as much as I can in my garden.

I work at a food rescue. It is hard to get food from places because the company feels it is a liability if someone gets sick. Yes some companies will throw the food out rather than donating it.. If you volunteer at our rescue we are allowed to get free food. I do find it helps with the cost of food. There is such a need right now for food. Try volunteering. It is alot of fun.

If your hearts right with God and you go to serve at a food bank and end up being blessed yourself, I see that as the favor of God. Not that we serve to get anything, but if it happens, just be grateful. When I was a single mom and finally went to food banks for help, I was very disheartened because so much of the donations were not even good. I mean so out of date they smelled horrible when we got them home. Or cans so damaged the food had gone bad. It wasn’t til a church I attended at that time gave us some food from their food kitchen that I was able to feed my kids decently. It only made me VERY mindful that when I’m in the position to be able to help someone like that, to ONLY give things that are good. Not things that have sat in the back of a cabinet that no one in your house would touch, and was SO outdated that people would be afraid of it anyway. Nothing makes you feel more deflated as a mom, that to THINK you have food for your kids, just to open it and find out it’s bad. If you give, give what YOU would eat or just don’t.
I know if you’re truly hungry you will eat most anything but AS a Christian, shouldn’t we do whatever our best is. His Word says “As you’ve done for the least of these, you’ve done it for Me” Matt 25:40

Yep. We helped at our church food bank for ten years. They now have a lot of leftovers every month. So, rather than waste it, the food bank director puts it on a pew at the back of the sanctuary and asks each family from the church to please take some items home with them so she doesn't have to throw them out.

Must be a local thing. Food banks here are filled with lots of bread and pastry. Little to no fresh food, can food or meats. I used to wonder why poor people in America are so overweight...then I helped out at a food pantry. It explained a lot in my mind. I know they are donations, but really around here it is more like the Junk Food Pantry.

This is true. I live in a rural area in Washington State and on Thursdays the food bank is open and has lines of cars for miles waiting to get food boxes. The people don't want the fresh foods though, only what can be microwaved or immediately consumed. A man from the food bank fills his truck after there are no more people left wanting food boxes and he then distributes everything in his truck in the parking lot of our local grocery store. Only about 8 of us wait for him every Thursday and he'll have fresh meats and fresh produce. I usually get a shopping cart full of fresh vegetables and because of this blessing I've been able to make us fresh stews and steamed vegetables each night for several weeks now. It's sad, most people don't know how to cook and their not interested in learning.

I’m so glad you shared this guy’s comment with us. I can’t stand the thought of food being thrown away. I live alone and I cook and portion my meals and freeze them so I don’t waste anything. I could afford to go out and eat but I would rather be home and stay away from the crazy people out there. I will check into this and I like your idea of volunteering too. Tithe to a food bank is another great idea Thanks Ninja

I don't get these types of meat from my food bank. I get a little hamburger and a little chicken. Lately I received a few pork chops. My food bank is getting less donations from stores and grants are not as plentiful. I am grateful for everything I receive and the people who donate their time to help others.

You nailed it. I volunteer and my wife volunteers. At the end of the day, we collect food. We don't think of it as payment but saving the food from being waisted. We then give out food to family and friends who need it but don't go to food banks.

For folks that are seniors, there is a program called "commodities" where based on income, you can get groceries such as canned fruits, meats, beans, veggies, boxes of pasta, rice, oatmeal, cereal, shelf stable milk, powdered milk, dried lentils, beans, peas, and a big block of "government cheese". Most states offer this program, you must check with your local Dept On Aging, or even call a local senior center. Blessings to all and thank you EN for the information you share.

I've worked in pizza delivery for the last 8 years. I have seen managers throw pizzas away when we have people working minimum-wage jobs and could take them home. Really pisses me off. But the same employees would not eat the pizzas on the shelf when they were more than three hours old. Truly these people have never gone hungry. They're going to be in for a real shock.

Yep! 100%... my stupid efforts at helping the helpless made me understand why there is so much waste and so many people in need... they simply don't want help... they want a servant to play a specific role in their little theatre of life gone wrong... I'm willing to do that, to a point...

I got fired from Outback Steakhouse as a manager during one of the hurricanes bc instead of leaving the food for an insurance claim i cooked up all the chicken on the grill, and gave cooked meals to all the employees. They made us stay til Friday close and charge families who were booted from hotels, then come back Saturday morning to board up the windows and doors instead of taking care of our own homes and families!! The hurricane hit Saturday night! Karma got em bc the truck with all the steaks they were turning into insurance claim was stolen!

I watched this video while making breakfast for my wife and me. After watching, we visited our local food pantry. There was a lot of activity there and plenty of surplus food being given away. I grow some of our own food and share it with my neighbors. Money is tight so I didn't mind picking up some food.

Ninja, our church has a good bank on Wednesday nights. We received about 2000 lbs of food this week. Last week from one of the stores you mentioned we received expensive cheeses, salads, vegetables, fruit and bread. If people do not take it, it would end up in the dumpster. We have four commercial freezers of meat as well. If anyone is in Northern KY and needs more info, please reply.

30% of vegetables coming over the boarder is diverted to food banks in Arizona. At the end of the day, they let people take stuff to feed y to farm animals. They get lots of stuff from restaurants and freashner and easy.

When I worked at Whole Foods Market I got written up for taking home expired food (and eating it for lunch) instead of throwing it in the compactor
