Actually the jacket will remain waterproof but when it wets out it can no longer breathe so condensation builds up on the inside

This isn't even true (at least it is misleading). If DWR _only_ failed because of wearing off, then that would be acceptable to most people.

However, DWR will fail THE FIRST TIME YOU WEAR IT IN HEAVY RAIN for half an hour or more (plus or minus a little depending on the jacket).

That is a much greater problem than wearing out.

Reproof your jacket in your laundry washer with goretex or whichever membrane proofing liquid is required, simple & easier than buying new gear

I like Patagonias approach with H2NO. It’s not a proprietary membrane, it’s literally just a standard each piece of gear needs to meet. So if you actually read what each piece of thier raingear was designed for and buy appropriately, you’ll be set.

I got a 3-layer Rainshadow three years ago cause I wanted something storm worthy that looked good around town and that was the only high quality one I could find in budget.

It’s been perfect, and seen some severe weather where I’d have been in real time Rourke had it even leaked. I only trust H2NO and Gore Tex Pro if I can help it. eVent breathes way better than others but sounds like plastic and isn’t particularly durable.

Surface wetting does not mean it's not waterproof. Goretex is still waterproof without the DWR.

I've not used a gtx or other membrane fabric jacket for over 20 years. Ventile is the only answer that suits my outdoor needs and isn't sweaty either.

Problem with these rain clothings is the pfas forever chemicals used to waterproof them

Don't wash in normal detergent, rather
Use a wash in recoat product such as those produced by Nikwax or Graingers regularly and you'll be fine .

Thank you reminding me. After a couple wet days in Sweden, I was planning on standing in my rainjacket in my shower as soon as I arrived back home. Because I really can't tell if it was doing a good job: was rain getting through or was I just sweating underneath? I'll need to figure it out today b/c that shit I had bought after a couple other jackets had been failing me was EXPENSIVE.

If the DWR on your rain jacket wearing off means the jacket is no longer waterproof you were never wearing a rain jacket, you were wearing a windbreaker.

After getting many i think my columbia watertight II is really good.have a blue in L which is kinda big for me but was quite effective on my hikes even in cold weather

Materials like wool are naturally waterproof and don't rely on a coating of waterproofing spray
