Still annoys me how much the anime censored this compared to the manga. In the manga that shot from Akainu actually blew a third of Whitebeard's head right off! In that version Akainu running away makes more sense since Whitebeard was still fighting with all his strength while missing a portion of his head!

anime does a MUCH better job than the manga here, in the manga whitebeard just showed up outta nowhere, punched akainu really hard, akainu got up, jumped at him, tore a piece of his face and without flinching while akainu was still airborne from the jump wb just smacked his gut and akainu was down for multiple chapters
