I'm all for paying taxes. Even God himself told people to pay taxes (and not just to the church). However, and this is not exclusive to the U.S., I think the government is too predatory when it comes to certain forms of taxation. If they loosened up on how much they try to tax people, especially the wealthy, I think wealthy people would be more willing to pay their fair share and they would make up the difference in amount taxed per person by the influx of payers. I know this doesn't apply to to everyone, but I really do think a major reason why the majority of wealthy people avoid taxes like they do is because of how predatory the rates the government taxes them are at.
