It is not the licks. It is not the technical proficiency. It is not the repertoire. This is an example of listening and serving the song. That's what being a pro is all about. It's the same as the principle of acting improv "yes and..." without getting in the way. Look at the eye contact and the nod. It was two people in the moment telling each other "I got you."

I know the sax player, Kaidi! He went to the same music school as me. I was fortunate enough to be in a music and theatre residency with him, where he and a violinist (sadly, I can't remember her name) played the most unbelievably, extraordinarily stunning improvisation. It takes my breath away every time I listen back to the video.
