Показать описание
We decided to visit the trademark of Greece, one of the most famous ancient archaeological sites in the world. We used our car from our place to a convinient Metro station to park it and we took the Metro to the Acropolis station.
The Acropolis of Athens with the Parthenon Temple to dominate among the other structures, were build from white Pendelikon marble. After almost 2.500 years since the Golden Age of Athens the monuments still standing on the limestone hill, overlooking the City of Athens, even many invaders like Venetians and Turks, vandals, tourists left their marks through the ages.
The most recent massive damage to the monument happened on 1801 while the Scottish Thomas Bruce of the seventh Earl of Elgin with permission from the occupying Turkish government removed over half of the Parthenon’s sculptures, known as the Elgin Marbles, and sold them to the British Museum where many still reside today.
The Greek government never stopped claiming the marbles from the British Museum so to be returned where they belong, back to the place of their origin.
For those who are interested to read Acropolis history, there are tons of sites and videos to read and watch about.
After our visit to Acropolis we followed the stone road down to the foothill and wondered around the ancient and colorful areas of Plaka and Monastiraki which are ideal to stroll through their flea market, to buy souvenirs, rest at a cozy resto and have an “ouzo” with Greek “meze” or just to have a coffee. Tons of people locals and tourists from numerous countries strolled around to a place where ancient along with modern and folklore mix up!
