In this tutorial I show you how to know SATA cable version and cable speed, will SATA 1, SATA 2 or SATA 3 deliver 6 Gb/s? Serial ATA 3gb/s vs 6gb/s? How can you tell your SATA cable is rated at 6 Gb/s? Are all SATA cables the same? Do you have to call then SATA I, SATA II and SATA III to be completely correct???.... YES YES YES YES and YES!! This video should explain it all so you can save your money!

Remember that any version of SATA cable can get damaged, if a cable won't deliver full speed, it's nothing wrong with the version of it, just that specific cable.

Hope this helps you save your money and give you piece of mind when choosing PC parts!

THANK YOU! I've been looking for information about the difference between SATA cables. I always thought there was no difference because the interface between SATA I and SATA III are exactly the same (wiring and connection) and now I know that I was right. I have, however, encountered a bad SATA cable here and there. I was very surprised to find this because a cable is such a (comparatively) simple item. But when I swapped out the bad cable for another one, the problems I was having went away. This has happened to me twice and so that's why I was thinking I may have been using the wrong "speed" cable. SATA cables are short, as a rule. It's not like the signal is going to degrade over such a short run. So I don't know what the problem with these cables could have been but I'm very aware that such a condition can indeed exist. In situations where I'm getting flaky performance, I consider the most complicated problems (like a bad SATA controller or the drive) but if that's not the issue, I suspect the cable.

Thank you! straight to the point and no tedious how's/why's. I bought an ssd and wondered if I should buy a new sata III cable. but thanks to this explanation i'll just use my older sata cable

thank you so much, I am currently building a new PC using the Ryzen 5 3600, Asus B450M-A/CSM and 16GB DDR4 Ram and reusing an old case and i had a few older PCs laying around that i stripped cables and fans from and its been bugging me if those older sata cables would make a difference or not as they are different colours and that would help me layout the 4 HDDs i am using for media storage.

SATA type cable does affect drive speed. At least between the SATA I and SATA II & III because 150MB/s (SATA I) can be a bottleneck for fast SSD drives that have real life speeds of 200MB/s and more so...?
I believe you are doing the very common mistake of misinterpreting Gb/s as the same as GB/s (notice the capital 'B'). 1 Gb = 125 MB. And then there are additional real-life physical limitations that further affect real speed which means it won't even reach those theoretical speeds either.
Which means that max real speeds are +-....SATA 1 = 150MB/s; SATA II = 300MB/s, SATA III = 600MB/s

So admittedly SATA III is overkill but SATA I will often slow down modern SSDs. Therefore SATA II or III cable is ideal and with some of the fastest SSDs, go with SATA III only to get max speeds.

Correction: The locking mechanism already existed from SATA II. And as far as I know, there are two types. The one you showed in the video and the rare "Crimping SATA" variant.

Sorry but you are wrong. First of all you haven't showed any graphs proving what you say, instead i have graphs to prove that sata, sata2 and sata3 cables actually make a difference. My sata2 cable was giving an 83mb/s read speed vs 130mb/s of sata3 cable. also a sata3 cable on sata2 drive makes the drive slower. In the begining I didn't think this would matter but it did.

Thank you for confirming this. I read the same information elsewhere from 2015 and you confirmed that information. Done and dusted.

Thank you - It’s been almost 10 years since I formatted an external drive and I wasn’t sure, but based on your information about SATA 3 I did more digging & remembered how to initiate a drive 😅
