Which SATA Cable Should I Use?

Have you ever wondered how to identify what version of SATA cable you have, and what’s the maximum speed your SATA cable can run at? How do you tell if a SATA cable is rated for 1.5 Gb, 3 Gb, or 6 Gb? Is the cable itself made for SATA I, SATA II, or SATA III? What does 26 AWG, 28 AWG, or 30 AWG mean? What types of SATA connectors are there? This video will explain it all!

All the facts needed in under 3 minutes. No nonsense, no prattle, no music. This is how to make a good youtube video. Main takeaways: (a) the cable spec has not changed since SATA 1, all cables support SATA 3 with 6Gbps (b) connectors with lock/latch is an improvement (c) angled connectors come in left/right (or up/down) varieties (d) Wire gauges 26 to 28 are common, lower is thicker and better wires.

Mind blown! 🤯
I have amassed DOZENS of these things and was always under the impression there were speed differences.

I was about to order sata cables and this video helped me realize my useless cd drive was using one. Yay. Purchase averted.

dude i have over 30 sata data cables and wasnt sure if they had speed bottlenecks and you just taught me that left and right angle ends and better wirer management i use two duel hot swap bays for HDD Repairs and Backups and you just helped me out big time i got faster speeds shorter wires and looks much better SUBBED and LIKED keep up with the tips my bro. VIDEO IDEA: now in days i keep having to fix HDD and sometimes SSD and the main problem for pc Slow down is Disk Fragments and alot of people dont know to defrag and optimize there drives i have a drive that can write at 150GB/s Plus and same one that use to do those speeds the different is one is defrag and i only backup and copy from this drive and only run it for a shortest time possible SO the Video Idea is PROPER PC CLEANING AND MAINTAINING would be a great idea from dust and checking parts to software cleaning and proper wire management

I had 6 SSDs connected to an icydock express cage (5.25" drive bay insert that contains 6x 2.5" drives) annnd 3 years later, I had one drive show up as unknown filesystem, followed by another just not being detected any longer.
Not connected using RAID, all connected to the same sata controller on the motherboard, all with locking ends, firmly connected.
However... 3 of the 6 SATA cables were totally thinner cables! 3 of them were 26AWG, while the other 3, not labelled at all, were super flexible, thinner variants.
2 of the 3 drives that died were using the thinner gauge SATA cables!
I cant be positive if these deaths were caused by the icydock enclosure, or ther cables, but I sure as hell will be replacing the last remaining cable ASAP now that I know!
I also opted for connecting directly to the mobo and not using the icydock anymore, but yeah.
I learned stuff from this video, thanks!

amazing... i have very very old sata cables and came here cuz I was also suspicious they are all the same thing since there are not electronics on them...

the thickness and locking def something to consider if willing to upgrade...

making a truenas scale server out of old drives and need to buy like 10 extra satas so I was wondering if it was worth going for the more expensive ones, but I guess they are all the "same "

Muchas gracias bro, siempre tuve esa duda sobre el cable.

Thanks, I had some cables that just say "SATA" and this is the first source I found that makes clear that the cable doesn't matter. Every other source I found just goes into the three SATA types but never talks about if the cables changed.

It's interesting to note, that the officially supported maximum length of a SATA cable is 1 meter, or 3.3 feet. However I know of two different times when people have used 2M length SATA cables to hold the SSD of a security system inside a safe while still recording to it.

As long as you run 26 gauge Sata cables you will be ok. It's the Sata port they're connected too that will distinguish the transfer rates. And try not to use a longer cable than necessary. At least that's what I have found building comps.

Wish there was a Sata 1 cable, the via k8t800 chipset doesn’t support sata3 and ssd's don’t have jumpers to limit their speed.

I have one cable I at first believed to be SATA, but "M2" is labeled on it. Can I use it to connect an HDD to my motherboard ?

Are all these 3 SATA adaptors are compatible with the oldeest SATA cable adaptor?

So does the same logic apply to cat 5, 5e, and cat 6? It's just copper wires.
