I agree with you completely about the “wife beater” . I smiled out loud when I heard your comment.

thanks for the emyr humphreys review, i live in wales and the 'near colonialism' of ireland, wales etc is very interesting to me, and you've made me really want to try him. Btw, emyr is pronounced like emir, e-meer, with the second vowel different from how you said it but the first vowel the same. Hieroglyphics is such a great novel title

the murdoch quote you read sounded like normal english to me, i wonder if it's a british english middle-class midcentury thing? the more tortuous speakers when i was growing up, older posher people, did speak like that

Kipling actually wrote a story (or two) about a man who goes mad, which is quite different from anything else he wrote, and i really want to read, but i can't remember its name. I think he's in a cell and goes insane

The mist by the trees behind you looks stunning.

I gave The Black Prince a go a couple years ago by Iris Murdoch, and I was enjoying it but it felt heavy... I think that's one of the novels in which she balances the characterisation out a bit more with the philosophical exploration...but I gave up on it at about p.80....it's a long novel... I do want to give it another go at some point...coz I want to read The Sea, the sea.

Emyr Humphreys sounds ace!!!! How come you love Welsh ficton so much? age 101 - that's incredible. I'm from South Wales so know a bit of welsh, but not a lot.

The story of Junius Wilson sounds absolutely devastating.

Do you re-read books much? I wonder what your favourite book would be that you love re-reading??

That's always been my own problem with Iris Murdoch's fiction: it seems much more about ideas than people.

Good news! The American election has taken a positive turn for Biden and no one in a position of power is taking Trump's lies about voter fraud or orders to stop counting votes seriously.
I read an Iris Murdoch novel early in 2019 - The Green Knight - and didn't like it. At some point I may try one other by her (probably The Sea, The Sea), but if I dislike that one, too, then no more Murdoch!
