MUHC Hybrid Medical Grand Rounds Tuesday, 4/9/2024 at 12h00-13h00
NovoNordisk Diabetes Lectureship

Educational objectives:
•Define mechanisms of communication between the gut and the hindbrain. •Distinguish between mechanisms that mediate aversive and non-aversive responses to weight loss drugs.
•Define relevant CNS targets for weight loss therapies.

Biosketch of Martin Myers Jr.:
Dr. Martin Myers is Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular and Integrative Physiology in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Michigan Health System. He holds the Marilyn H. Vincent Professorship of Diabetes Research. Dr. Myers completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and his MD and PhD at Harvad Medical School. He then undertook a fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Cellular and Molecular Physiology and was appointed to the faculty at Harvard. His talent was quickly recognized, and he was recruited to Michigan where he became the Director of the Michigan Diabetes Research Center, that in 2020 developed into the Elizabeth Weiser Caswell Diabetes Institute. Dr. Myers’ early work on the molecular mechanisms of insulin signaling, and then, his major focus on leptin signaling, obesity, metabolic syndrome and the hypothalamic/central nervous system control of appetite and energy balance has been well funded by NIH and other granting agencies over many years. His high impact research has been recognized by numerous awards and honors exemplified by the Jerome W. Conn award for research excellence, a NIH/NIDDK merit award, two Outstanding Scientist awards (Obesity Society and the American Diabetes Association Lilly award), the Ernst Oppenheimer Award of the Endocrine Society, election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians, and fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science. At the same time, Dr. Myers serves on grants panels and as editor and editorial board member of major journals. He is a co-founder of Molecular Metabolism. He continues to teach and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Myers work on the intricacies of leptin signaling via the CNS has shaped our understanding of the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Myers as the 2024 McGill Novo Nordisk Lecturer.
