Steam Deck grows Linux for everybody! Valve unbricks Steam Decks! New weird accessory!

Besides using the X300G to game with my friends, I’ve also enjoyed some solo gaming on an 80-inch screen. That level of immersion is incredible!

0:54 Valve actually did far more than double Linux users on Steam because before the Steam Deck, a lot of people already used Proton, which is the reason the Steam Deck can run so much games now.

So if we actually compare from the period just before the release of the first version of Proton on Github, Linux users on Steam were not even in the tenth of a percent, which means Valve literally multiplied by 20+ the number of Linux users.
It's not an overstatement when we say they revolutionized gaming on Linux.

I have moved over to Linux when Windows and Microsoft became intolerable. Best thing I ever did. :) I'm running Manjaro Gnome and it is quite honestly great! It has honestly drastically improved my productivity work-wise, and these day I actually enjoy using the computer compared to with Windows. I still dual-boot Windows 10 since my HP Reverb G2 (Windows Mixed Reality) isn't fully functional in Linux. Sure, Monado XR can make the headset work in 6dof, but the WMR controllers are unfortunately still a no-go.

As a dev. Yes. I want to see more Linux development. It'll open a lot of doors for gaming and for performance on something like the steam deck. Right now we got the learning curve to deal with, but with valve's support, we could go so much further very quickly. Downside is, if the shoe ends up on the other foot and suddenly we need a proton like layer on Windows for Linux development. I hope we never reach that point, we need to desktop space OS's as this monolithic virtual monopoly has to end. Android is one right, but their closed system is just not something I want to deal with.

The steam deck made me familiar enough with Linux that I'm now considering switching to it on pc, and I know there's many people like me that no longer see Linux as a foreign OS used only by specialist and tech enthusiasts.

I suppose the old adage is true: a rising tide lifts all ships. Linux being adopted the way it is by Steam Deck can only be a good thing for all Linux distros (not just SteamOS) and PC gaming in general.

Also, I'm glad to see the Deck (or in this case, the Ally X) used as a local multiplayer machine! Got myself a handful of Stadia controllers over the course of the last year - they work really well with the Deck over Bluetooth, and they're part of my portable setup that I bring to a local meetup group I help to run in my area.

Lastly, screw GameStop for closing GameInformer. The goodbye message that was initially posted to their Twitter was determined to be AI-generated, then the team posted a real goodbye on the same account, which was then subsequently deleted. A 33-year legacy just completely stomped on and buried.

I wonder if valve doesn't want to release a general steam os because right now the hardware that needs to be supported is limited making it easier to improve. If they release a general image they may get pressure to support the other handhelds which will take up resources that they know someone else will end up doing

I just wanted to say rhat I appreciate you putting the names of the games you're showing off in the video. It's such a small thing but most creators don't do it (you're the only one I can think of who does it consistently). Even big channels like LTT don't do so. Personal PC rig switched to Nobara from Windows. Since Nobara is also based on Fedora, I guess you can count that towards the Fedora stats even though Nobara has its own category.

Definitely have to give a big thanks to Valve for Proton as it has indirectly made me love my OS again. I do wish my production systems were Linux compatible, but for everything else I've tried, I've so far had no problems 😊

We'll get more Linux native stuff, and developers will get better at it, when that market gets a handful of percentage points bigger. Valve's doing their best to grow Linux, and Microsoft is doing their best to deter people from Windows.

The Steam Deck is my ultimate party machine! I was just playing Halo Co-op natively thanks to a new mod for that. And also played Goat Simulator 3, Double Dash, and Mario Party with someone else. Some of the most fun we've ever had! -It’s not perfect though, like it’s not powerful enough for the likes of 'Party Animals' or 'Goat Simulator 3 4 Player split-screen.
