Lannisters hunting Lions to extinction is a very cool metaphor for how the house eats itself alive

Lion's attack on Tytos could be interpreted as sign that he is absolutly unworthy of leading Lannisters, if even his coat of arms reject him

That being said lions do still exist in casterly Rock as Cersei and Jamie do interact with them during their childhood.

All noble houses should use their sigils as weapons, no matter how inconvenient. It's important to push your brand, even on the battlefield.

Fun fact: wild lions(Talking about Panthera Leo and not pre-historical animals like cave lions or north american lion) used to inhabit europe quite long. In southeast europe, they ranged from Greece all the way to balkans and to as far as Hungary and southern Ukraine.

They went extinct elsewhere in 4th century (thank you a lot, Romans) but managed to survive in Greece all the way to 1000 A.D.

There’s evidence that lions once lived in Europe as well. Lions were used a lot as sigils and in art in the Middle Ages. It’s unlikely that SO MANY people would be familiar with an animal who just lives in sub Saharan Africa, so it’s possible they were native to Europe as well.

Casterly rock has a few captive tame lions and essos still has wild lions but like the starks and direwolves they’re almost extinct in the wild in Westeros

It's crazy how every single person int his show has a history and it's been written.

in an alternate timeline House Clegane is the wholesome House of the Hounds we could cheer for.

So, the Lannister became dog rather than Lion?

I’m a huge animal lover so house clef and just became my favorite house. They might not be legendary heroes of old legends. But they were loyal to their king and loyal to their dogs so much that they gave the honor of nobility to their dogs because they saved the king.
