Candidates are given the impression they might earn $60, 000/year while articling. Partly because they don´t always receive the support from their local chapter which they´re promised, candidates often end up articling for free. It´s discouraging that Appraisal Institute of Canada wouldn´t even put through a change of address to allow me to attend chapter meetings where I lived. How could I network? I took all the expensive courses (which taught next to nothing about appraisal), paid the high insurance fees and AIC dues for the priviledge of working for free. In the end, a new rule was passed saying that candidates had to complete their articling within 3 years of joining AIC. This would´ve been impossible for me. They also passed another rule saying that if I want to try again in future, I´ll first have to get a university degree. Be careful !
