As a relative newcomer I am thinking of trying braid for the first time. I understand that a greater casting distance can be obtained, and there is less drag offered by the thinner profile of braid. However, In your video you specify that you are using 50lb braid, which wouldn't be that much of a difference in thickness to a 15lb mono. Wouldn't it be better to use perhaps a 30lb braid, assuming, of course, that a adequate shock leader is attached?

Hi I use the 8000 surf blaster paired
With a penn15ft6 rampage continental.
I’m now using 15 lb braid with a 15 to 60lb tapered leader the bite detection is excellent . Very pleased with rod & reel.

I’ve had a Penn Surfblaster for a year paired with a Century T700. Really love it and now have it loaded with 100lbs braid for the cod at Arbroath. For OTD casting I’m using 50lbs shockleader, meaning I can use my finger. It works well, and the braid improves the distance no end.

I've had a Penn Surfblaster II 8000 for a couple of years now, still going strong, cleaned with warm water after every use, and serviced once a year, cleaned and re-greased, can't fault it!. I've had Plaice and Flounders, Dog fish and Whiting like everyone else, Cod, Rays and the odd Bass, heaviest fish was a Cod at 9.6lbs, loaded with 50lb Braid and 25lb Mono on the second spool. The other Beach Reel I use is an Okuma Surf-8K, casts like a dream, can't fault that either, loaded with 50lb braid.

I have 2 of these, they’re the best reels I’ve ever used, I’m Penn fan anyway

I use the mrk1 surfblaster. I’ve used it for a few years now and it’s been a absolutely brilliant reel. I fish rough ground marks in the Bristol Channel and it can crank anything over the rocks. I’ve had it pull multiple Thornbacks, some in excess of 10lbs and the reel has handled them with ease. I’ve rarely wash them and there is still zero corrosion. Brilliant reels, I can’t fault them.

I have the Surfblaster 3 in 8000 size and I love it. The two spools have braid on one and mono on the other, so I have the choice to change at any time. Coupled ro my Penn Tidal XR, it's the best combination I've ever had.

Great reel. However take the bail arm spring cover off and clean regularly, it's not well sealed corrodes and allows sand in. Used it deep drop fishing back in UK and now in Australia for pollock(UK) and kingfish. Holds its own with power. My arms give up before the reel. Kingfish fight harder than pollock at the same depth and this reel gives me no trouble

after years of using multipliers thinking that was the only way to cast distance I bought a penn 8000 loaded it with braid and was amazed at the distance I got the only issue I have had is the braid sometimes wrapping round the first eye when casting thanks for sharing

I had a Surfblaster many years ago when they first came out. I used it with a Sonik 15ft rod and the reel kept throwing loops off during casting (spool not overfilled either) causing crack-offs so not had one since. I’ve just acquired two Shimano Aerlex GT8000’s to start a Conti outfit, lovely reels.

Hi there I have 2 Penn Rampage II coupled with the Penn Surfblaster 2 reels, a very good couple rod and reel . I have only fished with mono lines which works well . The reason why i like the rods is i have small hands and the rods are slim making it easy to hold when casting . I have 2 other rods which are cheaper and also thicker in the butt i dont really use them much . Too awkward .

As a northern Californian surf angler distance is the way to go. My dad has a penn surf blaster and loves it paired with a 15' continental. I run a shimano aero technium paired with a Daiwa ballistic surf 13' throws a bait like no other. All and all its a great reel for bait and wait fishing.

I have a Zziplex Trinty GT and I use a Shimano Ultrega XTD with the line reducer fitted. I have filled it with 12lb Trabucco XTS match and matching 12lb to 60lb tapered leader. I went for the smaller one as it is lighter and can not fault it at the moment. It has helped me cast further and catch fish that the guys around me can't get to. I managed to win my first match with it, catching Pout, Whiting and Dabs.

I've had the same reel for 3 years and it's a topper mate, it's faultless, got it loaded with 30lb braid and 60lb shockleader WITH a 15 foot Grauvell rod (lived in Spain for 7 years and everyone has them)
