This is the best informative YouTube video I have ever watched. Seriously, it has all the information I need to know, just enough artistic detail to draw my attention and keep it long enough to internalize the content, and no other BS. I wish everything in life was like this video.

Big thanks to one of our manufacturers, Mendota Fireplaces by Johnson Gas Co. They had this still image on their brochures for years and we hired a local video editor, Matt Thune at Red Door Interactive to make it come to life. We had Mendota’s permission of course! Glad you enjoyed it and we really thinks it shows how efficient direct vent fireplaces are in a chimney. They are much more like heaters than fireplaces!!!

Great animation. The design can be further improved by combining the two outer air exchange pipes into one concentric pipe. Hot air exhausts though the inner pipe and cool air enters from outside through the outer concentric pipe which surrounds the inner hot pipe. This way the cool air warms before it enter the fire place and less wood is wasted on warming it before it burns and also it saves as a safety mechanism by isolating the hot exhaust air pipe with a cool air cushion. It is not my idea, I have seen this already being implemented in some other direct vents out there.

is it wise to close off the vents in the bricks with white insulation that are on the bottom of the woodstove insert and also the vents that are above the woodstove? we had liners installed in our chimney 7 years ago. some of the old creosote is falling off and landing next to the bottom of the liner and heatilators and is causing a slight creosote smell when we burn. will closing off the vent slots in the bricks solve the problem and is it safe?
