Putin Will Not Attend Gorbachev Funeral

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday paid tribute to Mikhail Gorbachev but will not attend the late former Soviet leader's funeral, a decision reflecting the Kremlin’s ambivalence about Gorbachev’s legacy.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that prior to departing for a working trip to Russia’s westernmost Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, Putin visited a Moscow hospital where Mikhail Gorbachev’s body is kept before Saturday’s funeral to lay flowers at his coffin.

Pretty low of him not to attend. Gorby is blamed for a lot of things, but I doubt Russia would be in as good a state without him. We see how well this idea of maintaining the Soviet borders at all costs is working out. I’m sure that the USSR could have devolved into civil war and been attacked by NATO shortly after had Gorbachev not made the decisions he did.

Totally understandable. That man, Gorbachev, had absolute power to stop the collapse of the USSR. He didn't have the will to do it though. 27 million Russians sacrificed their lives for the USSR and Warsaw Pact and everything went in vain due to that man. The economy was beyond repair at one point in the late 90s and people lost their entire savings. There was no social security and the state property was pillaged by west controlled oligarchs. The Soviet Union transformed overnight from a superpower to Russian Federation, a third world nation.
