What Hearing Aid Dome to Use? What About Custom Ear Molds?

Purchasing a pair of hearing aids is only one of many factors that must be considered in order to hear one’s best in spite of hearing loss. Other factors that need to be addressed after hearing aid purchase include programming and physically fitting the hearing aid to the ear canal.

In this video, we will focus on hearing aid fitting or how the hearing aid is coupled to the ear canal.

Although there are many different types of hearing aids, we will focus specifically on Receiver in the Canal (RITE) style which is by far the most popular and widely used style of hearing aids. Its ability to fit different ear sizes and shapes is due to the swappable rubber domes which is what is inserted into the ear canal. Custom ear molds can even be used instead of the rubber domes with this hearing aid style.

This video will explain what type of hearing aid dome and/or custom ear mold is most appropriate for a given type of hearing loss, whether flat hearing loss, steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss, or normal low frequency with hearing loss in the mid and high frequencies.

After a hearing test at Costco they said I had a cookie bite hearing loss which the ENT Dr diagnosed 8 years ago. Costco said my high and low frequencies were okay. They said the mid frequency moderate loss is tricky. Will see how much success the hearing aids will be.

I am long time user of hearing aids, awaiting delivery and set-up of my third pair of HA's. I was not able to use rubber domes, they wouldn't stay in, caused discomfort. I use custom ear molds with "canal locks". Canal locks are clear plastic extensions that help hold ear mold in place. Canal locks are usually glued to the ear mold but may break off if HA is dropped. Use care in removing ear molds, strain on thin connecting wire can break it at the ear mold. Repair is not covered by warranty. All current hearing aid designs cause distortion of guitar sounds, my nylon stringed guitar sounds better with HA's removed although sound is "dulled". My new Unitron HA's may perform somewhat better than my previous ReSound HA's while listening to recorded music but will still have problems with my guitar sound per my audiologist.

I have a flat mild to moderate hearing loss.. i have had all types of hearing aids… I had IIC hearing aids, The phonak Behind the ear ones with a earmold that covers the whole outside, … the lyric ones, and im now trying RIC ones.. I have the tulip domes at the moment.. after trying a ton of different domes on RIC hearing aids, .. and really am not a fan of domes.. What kind of ear molds would you recommend that ask my audiologist about? Which brand of RIC ‘s are best for music??? Ive had noo luck with anything at all yet..
