Very true! A social network without new tools is not going to succeed.

Instead of why now, what's different is more important.

Thousands of successful companies are built in the times where there is a strong imcubent and without any disruptive technology. They just have a different formula of success.

A new social network seems like the worst start-up idea, EVEN IF your network is new and good. You need a critical mass of users you wont get because they are already on the established networks and wont switch until you have a critical mass of users.

The answer to "why now" can easily be AI for a large majority of companies

I remember watching a video that said something to be effective, if you make a platform design to compete with YouTube or Facebook or whoever you were going to attract the people who got kicked off in the first place

People inherently get bored of social networks. It’s like asking why change your wardrobe and buy new clothes or eat new food. Sure it won’t be some novel new technology but you have hard tech for that

Nowadays many founders are just finding problems for the solution they have created.

Why's I launching now? To fight the inflation.

I used to write for a popular photography blog and every month there would be a top post that said “introducing X, the Instagram Killer”, and it would just be Instagram but with 1 or 2 extra features.

Always so annoying. If you introduce your network by being X, but with Y, you’ve already lost.

If they made money and had customers he wouldn't care to ask "why now". And if it's a hype he wouldn't care either. So: hump on hypes or get your own traction.

Grindr basically is a niche social network that's very successful

Oh yeah?! But mine's gonna be different!

Mine will be zoom for gorillas.

In my time as a zookeeper, I noticed a problem: gorillas get lonely and bored and this is mainly because there were too few other gorillas. However, with the rise of zoom and other videoconferencing software, we can leverage this disruptive new technology to solve the loneliness epidemic that plagues our zoos.

Trust me, it's gonna be awesome.

I can imagine someone pitching a social network for cyclists and it getting rejected. But at the the same time there's Strava that has actual users
