We’ve reported many times on so-called truck-eating bridges. But recently, we learned of yet another. This one is called the Can Opener and is located in the town of Delaware, Ohio, just north of Columbus. Like so many of its fellow truck-consuming structures, the Can Opener has developed a reputation. And also as with other such bridges, the community where it’s located has taken many steps to try to cut back on collisions involving it. One odd twist: Unlike its counterparts, the Can Opener is now listed by one company as a historic site. Land Line Now’s Mark Reddig talks with Lee Yoakum, the community affairs director for Delaware, Ohio.

I’m originally from Delaware and witnessed a semi load of hay get torn apart back in the early 80s. There are definitely enough warning signs now. Certainly hope they don’t lower the road or raise the bridge. This is definitely a residential area and there are plenty of ways to get through town without passing under this bridge, so I’d like to see it remain as is. Excellent interview with Mr. Yoakum!!
