Indian craftsmen produce this level of detail with simple hand tools today. Just takes time and money.

The Alexander Sarcophagus is definitely one of the greatest treasures of Greek/Hellenistic antiquity to have come down to us. The partial survival of the polychromy makes it all the more precious.

While I would not necessarily call myself a connoisseur of art per se = I do appreciate it. As much as the quality of work we see is truly breathtaking as it reveals how some can perfect a skill to the point of artistic majesty it also never fails to amaze me in that = someone had to first envision this.

Moral: a craftsman can certainly wield a chisel and hammer to amazing effect. It must also be remembered that prior to that = they had the capacity to first think it all out. Simply conceiving of such a creation is alone a monumental feat. These were not a result of _"paint by numbers"_ - and therein lay the true artistry in my humble opinion. Enjoy your day folks.

34 years ago I went from San Francisco to Istanbul just to spend an hour with the Alexander Sarcophagus. They made you check your camera at the door then. It looks like the museum has been improved since then.

I love your comment about having a team of craftsmen working simultaneously on the sarcophagus. I’ve watched videos on YouTube of a gang of wood craftsmen carving up logs to build this beautifully intricate Buddhist looking temple. Obviously wood is an easier medium, but the same technique applied to intricately carved stone of any kind makes just as much sense.

I find it funny how “mysterious” so many ancient things are to some folks, when there are almost always modern analogues.

Alexander's sarcophagus is like a salesman's sampler of border designs. I wonder if the box shop charged by the motif, and Al's buyer came in and said, "Just include everything, price isn't a problem."

I've always taken mind blowing ancient sarcophagi for granite.

It is always funny when someone say that a simple and a complicated thing can't come from the same period while spending a fortune to buy the latest IPhone for themselves. 😁

I dearly love some of the Etruscan designs that seem to have characterizations of the deceased in life. They're funny & charming - a style the Romans never seemed to master.
