In this video, Keith Barker covers the basics of IPv4 subnetting. This comprehensive introduction traverses quite a bit of material, including the different IP classes, network masks, and various other aspects of IPv4 that will enhance your networking skill set.

Keith begins this in-depth video by outlining the theory behind why IPv4 is needed and how it’s set up to function. He’ll break down each component of an IP address, then demonstrate how they’re divided into the three primary classes necessary for subnetting. These classifications matter because they indicate the network number, host number, and use different default masks (i.e., a point of separation between the network and the host). This separation is often referred to as a “class boundary.” It also sets the stage for us to be able to chop up the entire network into smaller chunks of computers or even individual users in a process called “subnetting.”
