They talk about the effects of getting sunburned, whether getting a base tan will protect you, and what to look for in sunscreen. Research has shown that those who work outdoors throughout the year and are consistently exposed to reasonable levels of sun and adapt by tanning are far less likely to develop cancer (edit melanoma only. Other less dangerous but still serious forms of skin cancer still increase - see comment below) than those who stay indoors most of the year and then get exposed during their holidays. I think there are a few clues in that to help take a balanced approach and weigh up our risks. In general, if we try to reduce one risk to zero, other risks increase.

I'm not questioning their advice btw, just adding some broader context that our bodies have already adapted to most of this longstanding environmental risk, just like I'd remind germaphobes that we do have an immune system that has adapted to offset most of the risk. Take reasonable precautions but don't panic. Stay alert for changes in your skin and see your doctor regularly and if you notice anything.

And they all laughed at me for going out dressed like a Victorian lady in summer.

Q: If I am wearing broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen, in a coffin, at night, am I safe from skin damage?

Dermatologists: Not at all.

Thank you for saying that darker skin still needs sunscreen. I had an actual dermatologist tell me otherwise and it made me suspicious of her. I ended up leaving her and dont regret it.

Asian Countries: Whatever happens I just *don't want to get tanned* in the summer.

America and Europe: Whatever happens I just want to *get tanned* in the summer.

I have been accused of "overreacting" with regards to sun protection by friends and family members. I feel like these great doctors have validated what I've been doing all along. I am 44 and wear a good sunscreen every day even if I'm not going anywhere. If I do go out, I put on a hat and sunglasses. I even wear special sunscreen hand cream AND special sunblocking sleeves for driving, to cover my hands and arms. I found a lip balm with sunscreen that I love and I use it constantly.

When I was a teenager I never wore sunscreen and loved baking myself in the sun. I actually burnt myself to the blister stage more than once. Then, when I was 19, doctors removed a suspicious mole from my arm and that was all it took to make me "scared straight". I started wearing it religiously. It's paid off immeasurably, when someone says I don't look my age, or that I have great skin. I've kind of acknowledged to myself that I've already done harm by getting those burns early in life, but I don't want to compound the damage.

I don't avoid the sun or fear the sun- I love being outside, I love hiking, going for walks, digging in my yard- but I just take steps to protect myself. It's like wearing a helmet when you're mountain biking.

I work outside as a gardener/landscaper everyday for a living and I never have a sunburn because im very proactive at applying sun block everyday. Being completely covered in tattoos that you don’t want to fade helps keep the habit going too 😂

They made it sound like UV exposure will eventually have us all bursting into flames. I was waiting to hear, " Using sunscreen can also lower the risk of spontaneous human combustion".
