In this short video, we're talking about the Irish government's recent sale of a 5% shareholding in Permanent TSB. The Irish Government has sold a 5% stake in Permanent TSB, generating €55.2 million for the Irish Exchequer. The Irish State continues to hold a 57.4% shareholding in PTSB after the sale. This comes as PTSB stock has appreciated by over 300% over the past three years. Recently, AIB bought back €215 million worth of shares that were owned by the Irish State and last year the Irish Government fully exited its investment in Bank of Ireland.
As at December 2022, €21.1 billion out of the €29.4 billion that was invested in AIB, BOI and PTSB as part of the bailout of Irish banks post-financial crisis had been recovered by the Irish State. The State’s remaining investment in AIB and PTSB is currently valued in the region of €6.3 billion, leaving a shortfall of €2 billion to be recovered. Therefore, if the Irish State is to breakeven on its investment in nominal terms, further dividend payments and share price appreciation will be required.
