Mass in = Mass out is not entirely true if we have really high energy reaction inside our system, in fact the equation is more like: Mass in + generation = mass out + accumulation and we can generalize it that to every extensive property we want.

I also need a bit of clarification on what a stream is. Can a stream refer to a combination of components, or must it refer to individual chemical reactants? Like if there was a mixture of pure water and acetone fed into a system at the same time, would you need two different streams or just one to refer to the components?

Another question I have is how you determine your variables and their coefficients. Do you have any tips on setting up your variables for the equations for mass balances?
