So, context: this is the 1977 south african gp, the car you see in the video breaks down and starts a small fire but still big enough that 2 marshalls have to come to the rescue, the race is still going, so 2 marshalls run over, 1 of them with a fire extinguisher, 2 cars driving neareach other are at that part, 1 car swerves but the other one ( with tom pryce as the driver) doesn't see the marshall and hits him at over 140 mph, that marshall got obliterated but he had an fire extinguisher, that heavy piece of metal hit tom pryce in the head, he died instantly but his car went on, down the straight, hit another car going through the corner but at a much slower speed and then stopped

Apparently, the persons body who got hit was so torn apart and unrecognizable that the only way they could identify the man was doing a head count of all the crew/staff etc. then saw who wasn’t accounted for

Edit: Yes he was torn apart, he was damn near completely in half but somewhat intact. His pants didn’t fly off like some of you say, just takes one google search guys smh.

For anyone wondering, the name of the race marshall was Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren, he was 19 and loved motorsports, and was a responsible and committed marshal (you can see that for he was running to save someone).

context: The footage shows the car break down and the driver get out, however two marshals come to aid the driver. The first marshal makes it across the track without a problem, but the second one gets hit by Tom Pryce's car, splitting him in half and sending him across the track. Its 1977 were at the African GP (Grand Prix)
On the 22nd lap, an Italian driver named Renzo Zorzi was having trouble with his Fuel Metering unit, fuel started leaking into the engine which caused it to catch in flames, this caught the attention of 2 marshals by the name, Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren who was carrying an 18kg fire extinguisher (keep mind of this) and William Bill who was a panel beater. Zorzi couldnt disconnect from the cockpit as his oxygen pipe got stuck to his helmet, things took a turn for the worse when both marshals went ahead without full permission.
A Driver named Hans-Joachim Stuck and Tom Pryce who was directly at Stuck’s rear suddenly encountered both Marshals, Stuck immediately turned right to avoid the Marshals successfully doing so, unfortunately this is where things turn upside down when the Driver Tom Pryce who was not able to see the other marshal Van Vuuren suddenly hit him approximately going 270km/h Frederik was sent flying in the air and lands directly at Bill and Zorzi and dies fatally on impact with his body being mutilated from Tom Pryce’s car. Another unfortunate event happened when the 18kg fire extinguisher which was being carried by Van Vuuren falls directly at Tom Pryce’s head instantly killing him, this caused him to die and hit another Driver by the name Jacques Laffite fortunately for Jacques he didnt die but suffered from many injuries.

This is the best detailed context i can give (ima sound like a news reporter): In 1977, a public audience was watching a live race in person. In the middle of the race, a car in the race caught fire. Some guy came to help and since he did not have some water or a fire extinguisher, he could not do anything, the host of the race sent 2 guys (one with a fire extinguisher and one for assistance to help the guy in the car). Keep in mind that the race was still going on, and cars were going about 80-120 miles per hour. The 2 guys went and tried to cross. The person with the fire extinguisher went through safe. Then, the other guy was crossing and a car that was going about 90-110 Miles per hour hit him. The car collided with the guy and then next thing you know, the guy gets split in half. Guts flying everywhere, blood splashing on the other guys and the floor, his body sent flying as the audience paused and watched in shock. Some crying and some prossesing what happened. The race stoped and people were sent to help. Some people called emergency services. As ambulance, police and firetruck sirens are heard in the background, the race was cut short and cancelled.
